question about NY apartment prices

Okay, I'm not from New York, not even this country, so I don't know much about apartment prices.

I was just wondering, the episode where Elaine was about to move in to Jerry's building, they said it would cost $5000.

For what, a month, year? I thought it would be a bit much for a month, too little for a year.

I know Jerry is in the upper west side, and I do know that's quite an upmarket area there.

Then how about the $10000 guy, would that be a reasonable price too? (again, for a month or year?)

In New York, since there is a big demand and a small supply of apartments, you "tip" the building's manager/superintendent to give you preferential consideration to rent the apartment. Has nothing to do with rent.

My friends live outside (about 45 minute drive) from Manhattan. They are in a rather mediocre neighbourhood (with a crackhouse within sight), small apartment (450 sqft), one parking spot...

$1,200 per month!!

Maybe they are getting robbed, but I was reading somewhere that Monica's apartment on Friends (with the 12' ceilings and multiple bedrooms) would be in the neighbourhood of $4500 per month. Not bad for a cook and a coffee house waitress!

Just for a matter of record. George told MaryAnn, the NY Visitor Center girl, that he was paying $2,300 a month for his # 609 apartment. (The Muffin Tops)
