Yeah, that was the guy. He was doing that before then, but it was just as a character, and not as his persona.

And since this part of the thread started with "Taxi," some will remember Mark Blankfield's guest appearance on "Taxi" as a cloistered monk who has a whirlwind affair with Elaine during a break in his vow of silence.

Back to "Fridays," I guess many in this group are aware that the cast included not only Michael Richards but also Larry David, who played a recurring rabbi character. And, circling back from "Fridays" to "Taxi," there was a controversy on "Fridays" when a guest performer got into a supposedly real fist-fight with a producer, on camera -- Andy Kaufman.

I'm sure there are other connections among "Fridays," "Taxi" and "Seinfeld". But I think it's a stretch to say that the Kramer character was stolen from Jim Ignatowski. Sure they're both the obligatory goofball sidekick/mascot (and more),...but you might as well say both characters were stolen from Ed Norton and Maynard G. Krebs.

Some of them committed suicide. Most of them were unwilling participants. That's what happens when you have a leader who has no moral compass, but relies only on charisma -- and force when charisma doesn't work.

That is a reference to Jim Jones and the mass suicide in South America in the late 1970's. ( a cult group)

Jason Alexander is a talented stage actor. His range is considerably greater than that demanded by the "George" character.

They're not an "annoying couple". First, Estelle Harris and Jerry Stiller are not married to each other. Second, Jerry Stiller, with his wife Anne Meara, performed a much quieter, gentler brand of comedy for many years as Stiller & Meara.

Actually, Jerry's lifestyle more likely typifies that of "cattlovrr": there isn't a book to be found anywhere in his home.

Here's a small (and I do mean small) sample of "cattlovrr"'s "pseudo- intellectuals" who have lived just in my local Manhattan neighborhood over the years: Teddy Roosevelt, Frederick Remington, Herman Melville, Allen Ginsburg, George & Ira Gershwin, Charlie Parker, Joseph Papp. Innovative Broadway shows from "Hair" to "Rent" got their starts here. 1997 Pulitzer prize winner Frank McCourt (author of "Angela's Ashes") taught creative writing at my high school, a public school that, among other things, has produced two Nobel Prize winners. Yep, we're all just a bunch of "pseudo-intellectuals" around here.

On the Fridays/Taxi ripoff theory, M Richards was an original cast member who was doing the dofus routine before Ignotoski<--???spelling) ever showed up, if y'all will remember Jim was a later cast member, Check the dates on his appearence, not on the shows. It was on 3-4 season (if not more) before he showed up

Excuse me...the Rev Jim showed up early in Taxi history as he officiated at Latke's arranged marriage to make sure that Latke could stay in the USA--Richards is most definitely a Jim copy, and a pale one at that.

Agreed. And well put. But for the record: "Taxi" premiered 9/12/78; Jim first appeared in #8, "Paper Marriage," on 10/31/78; then Jim became a regular in the second season with #27, "Rev Jim: A Space Odyssey" on 9/25/79. "Fridays" was first broadcast 4/11/80.
