Seinfeld in Europe

Hello,

I would like to know in which country Seinfeld is on air now, especially UK, Spain, Switzerland and Nederlands

In France it's on Canal+, and for holydays 1 episode per day, now season 9

In UK, on the Paramount Comedy Channel everyday at 5.30pm. Currently on Season 5, last episode was The Marine Biologist.

Sweden is airing it once a week...

In Germany it runs every day on Premiere Digital, Pay-TV that requires a set-top box. They show the entire 180 episodes(?), which works out to about 6 months on a daily basis, and then tehy wait 6 months and start again. It's in Geman, which is shame, but as far as dubbing goes, it's state-of-the-art. Oh yes, it is also shown weekly on Pro7.

What I never understood was the dialect chosen to dub the series; Seinfeld was dubbed in "French-French" as opposed to "Qu�bec-French", which was a mistake in my opinion. In comparison, The Simpsons dubbed in Qu�bec-French is at least as good as the original and has been shown for many years. Similarly, the Qu�bec-French version of The Flintstones is a classic. (I once saw a French-French version of The Simpsons and it was unbearable.)

How many of our European friends see dubbed versions of Seinfeld? Are they any good?

Is it possible to successfully dub a sitcom in a foreign language? What are the elements that ensure a successful translation? Are the cases of The Flintstones and The Simpsons different because they are animated (as opposed to live-action)?

Believe me, I have almost every Seinfeld in the original (from US TV) and English is still my best language, but the German version is good! Even the voices sound uncannily the same, except Newman, for whom they surprisingly chose a very high-pitched one. There are a few glaring errors of translation, though. In fact, the whole episode 'The Fatigues' was named 'Erm�dungserscheinungen', which means 'symptoms of fatigue', as in being tired! Never mind that the guy wears his camouflage fatigues the whole time and that Elaine actually asks him what's up with those. They just settled for 'tiredness' and nobody bothered to look up a dictionary. Go figure...

In France, the dubbed version is also awful. Now on Canal +, it's the best system : multi lingual : you can choose french or english with french subtitles with the remote. You can even remove french subtitles, it is an undocumented option because french law on language requires subtitles. A couple of years ago, it was aired on Canal Jimmy, a very goog channel in english (with french subtitles of course).

The problem (with Canal + and Canal Jimmy) in the order of episode, with is not good. They take production order, and not the order which is used in the US and everywhere I guess. The Puerto Rican day is normaly aired, but for the Contest was dropped on Canal + (not on Canal Jimmy). Some people told because it was just after the death of JFK junior

You have language laws as well? I thought only the gaddamm separatisss had those.

In syndication, we don't get them in the order they were shown in the first run. It goes back and forth from one season to the next (at least here, it does).

Yes, each frech channel must be in French or with french subtitle. Even MTV has subtitles. There are very few exceptions : CNN, NBC. Another special law is that on french channel an important ratio of film must be produced by french.

But inside a season, is the original order respected ? For example for 5th season the order in France is : 5.1,5.3,5.2,5.4,5.5,5.6,5.8,5.7,5.9, 5.10,5.11,5.12,5.14, 5.13,5.15,5.16,5.17,5.20,5.18,5.19,5.22,5.21 The finale of the season is not even respected.

It's not random order. It's production order, which is (I think, but I'm not sure) the order or taping. See for example : www.epguides.com/seinfeld/

For example the Stranded 3.10 was taped during the second season, but was aired in the third season. Its production number is 209. In france, this episode is aired with the second season, which is not the case in the Netherland and all other country I guess.

There is the same problem with Dream On aired on Canal Jimmy. I have a fight with the program manager, and he told me that he checks with the production, and that this order is good, which lead to incoherency in the story. Sometimes french mangers are a bit annoying when they think there are the best and that they are right against all the world :-)

In The Netherlands it's on air on NET5, on tuesday or wednesday or both days.

That's correct And I can't follow it why it is on tuesday, and then on wednesday, and the other week only on wednesday. Next episode will be The Stranded

I use www.omroep.nl to check which episode will be on.
