You're probably correct that it's just a throw-away line. Or perhaps he's buying one for his mother?
He's being sarcasitc because nobody (almost anyway) wouldn't do that and its funny because Pottery Barn probably thinks that people actually do that sort of thing.
In other word, Jerry's just pointing out that he thinks catalogs are useless and just "junk mail". They never would have singled out Pottery Barn if this was not the case.
