Fans debate whether Jerry Seinfeld's stand-up comedy and acting talent are strong or weak, with mixed opinions on his contributions to the show's humor.
Allmost all caracters in the show is funny except Jerry Seinfeld.
His stand up comedy in the beginning and end of show is embarrasing to listen to and I can't understand how he could get end up in the stand up comedy business. He is probably a good writer but a bad actor and comedian.
But the rest of cast is hilarious...

Man you are so off. Jerry makes all the others funny and you're right it's because he's a good writer. But I think he is a good actor and makes the show so to say that he doesn't have talent and a bad stand-up act, is way off. His stand-up stuff is what makes the show, that's where he gets stuff for his show.
I've always enjoyed Jerry, except for the past two seasons.

My english is pretty good(compared to other norwegians) and I am able to understand practically all double meanings which appear in the show. And that's more than I can say for the translator which translate(of course) from english to norwegian. Audience in Norway who must use the translated sub text don't know what they are missing.
I am saying that the show as a whole is very funny. It is just Jerry that's not so funny...

In the discussion of loss of meaning translating from English to another language, let's not forget what they thought "comedian" meant in the country of his gymnast girlfriend.
(On a side note, She was from Romania.)
Something about pleasures never before imagined, or something. The joke was that the gymnast used the same exact description of the sexual prowess of 'a comedian' as Kramer used in describing to Jerry the sexual prowess of 'a gymnast'.
Hold on there, Bjxrnar. I've read this thread, and I don't think the
language comment was an insult. It's not a matter of anyone's 'standards'.
The show is written on a level, and you mention the double meanings
yourself, that requires a decent command of the English language. The
better your English, the more you will understand, and the funnier Jerry
will appear. If the person who translates the show into Norwegian doesn't
do a very good job, then maybe someone should write a letter and get
him/her replaced. I can imagine Jerry's quips after translation not being
as funny as when they come out of his mouth.

(Remove XXXX to reply)What are you talking about?! Jerry Seinfeld is absolutely hilarious. Not only is he funny on HIS show, but have you ever seen him on talk shows like Letterman. He kills on those shows. Granted, he is not a great actor. But he freely admits that he is a comedian not an actor(which is why he says he'll never do a movie). Besides, that's one of the things that makes the show even funnier. He is surrounded by some great actors in his cast which makes him look worse than he is. But watching him try not to laugh during the show is funny. He's constantly trying to hold back from cracking up. Do you remember the episode when George and Elaine were telling Jerry that he "can not not be funny". That is a perfect example. All Jerry was doing was sitting there, trying to hold a straight face. But he couldn't do it. That's what made it so funny. Jerry Seinfeld can not not be funny! TOM
I completely agree. It's the fact that he kind of stinks as an actor that makes it sooo amusing. I love when he goes into his tirades and screams. Like when he was taking the lie detector test and finally cracks and starts yelling all that stuff about Melrose Place. And don't forget the time when he grabbed Kramer by the shirt and screamed right in his face "Poppie peed on my sofa!!!" with spit flying out of his mouth and Kramer's water flying everywhere...Too good.

But Newhart is in the top leauge of comedy stars and Jerry just isn't.
Excusing him for not being an actor is possible but the fact is that the jokes he tells in the show is embarrasing to listen to. It is good he has actors playing the audience in the stand up comedy scenes. Else there would be little laughter.

I think you miss the point of the standup routine at the beginning of the shows. They are there to set the theme of the show for those that may be a little too dull to understand. So he does a bit on one idea that is then incorporated in the show. It is not supposed to be fall-down funny.
Also, Bob Newhart has been around since the late 50's. I listened to his routines as a kid. But Jerry has done more in a few years than Bob has done in a few decades. Newhart's original style was very close to Seinfeld's - poking fun at everyday occurrances. But his TV series were insipid formula sit-com. If it weren't for Julia Duffy I certainly would never have watched his second show, Newhart, for long. :-) But the ending of Newhart was great. A daring departure from the ordinary It was the best, Bjorn, the best! :-D
It's a "fact" that his jokes are embarrassing to listen to??!! Hardly. I saw Jerry do standup in 1989 using a lot of the same material and the audience laughter was deafening. And, how do you think he got a chance to have a sitcom in the first place?

There is an official list posted. I'll try to find it. The key is NOT the number of posts. It's the number of people who read it. We could have 100 lurkers for every posting member, and your dallas cowboys group could have 1 lurker for every posting member. The last time I saw the list, I do think Seinfeld was near the top. (This is the list that excludes all the sex-related groups, of course.)
