Why did he leave the show?

To hear Larry David tell it (and there's no reason to doubt him) he was suffering from a combination of burnout, and an itch to try something different, perhaps writing and producing a theatrical feature. He and Jerry are still on good terms, and he even drops by every once in a while to take part in a small way (for example, he's the voice of George Steinbrenner on the show, and made an appearance in that capacity at the end of the 1996-97 season).
