An article in the Hollywood Reporter says that the Seinfeld episode featuring Jerry's Junior Mints was a groundbreaker in TV product placement, in that the product not only was seen but was included in the plot. I loved the operating room scene in which one popped into an opened-up patient.

They can be very refreshing.

On Sep 8, 2:14 am, "Another performance by The Two Cheeks"

Jerry: ...Over the balcony, bounced off some respirator thing *into* the patient! George: What do you mean "into the patient"? Jerry: Into the patient, *literally*! George: Into the hole? Jerry: Yes, the hole! George: Didn't they notice it? Jerry: No! George: How could they not notice it?!? Jerry: Because it's a little mint. It's a *Junior* Mint.

KRAMER: Well who's gonna turn down a Junior Mint? It's chocolate, it's peppermint-- it's *delicious*!

JERRY: That's true.

KRAMER: It's very refreshing!

The various products that they used in the show made for more funny situations than if they just made a product up or just used a generic name.

Like when the gang is getting wine and a cake for "The Dinner Party" and George is arguing that Pepsi is better than wine:

GEORGE: I don't even drink wine. I drink Pepsi.

ELAINE: You can't bring Pepsi.

GEORGE: Why not?

ELAINE: Because we're adults?

GEORGE: You telling me that wine is better than Pepsi? Huh, no way wine is better than Pepsi.

JERRY: I'm telling you George, I don't think we want to walk in there and put a big plastic jug of Pepsi on the table.

It wouldn't have been as funny if George just said "Cola or Soda"

  • Also when George's father is eating Kashi
  • Or when Elaine eats JuJy Fruit when she goes to the movie
  • Or of course Drake's Coffee cake

there are countless examples

That's funny. Yes, the product brand names added a sense of realism and helped connect the audience to the characters but Frank was not a tree-hugging granola eater. He was eating his wife's "Kasha".

"Kasha is a <nasty, ed> porridge commonly eaten in Eastern Europe. In English, kasha generally refers to buckwheat groats, but in Slavic countries, kasha refers to porridge in general, and can be made from any cereal, especially buckwheat, wheat, barley, oats, and rye. It is one of the oldest known dishes in the Slavic cuisines of the Eastern European cuisine, at least a thousand years old." (Wikipedia)

========== [The Cigar Store Indian] JERRY: How would you describe the smell in this house? ELAINE: (sniffing) Dandruff? JERRY: Yeah, that's part of it. (sniffs) Kasha? ELAINE: There's some kasha. JERRY: Yeah. Dandruff, kasha, mothballs, cheap carpeting. It's pot pourri, really. =============== [The Doorman] KRAMER: So, you think your parents'll get back together?

GEORGE: I hope so. I can't take him living with me much longer. He makes this kasha, it stinks up the whole house. ================ [The Postponement] Rabbi: Can I offere you some Kasha Varnishkas? =================

When Frank moves in with George for a while and he's sleeping in the bed with him, and eating Kasha, that is a classic scene. The look on George's face as Frank offers him some, priceless.
