I just saw one of the earlier shows tonight where Elaine and Jerry are at George's office party. One of the guests starts going talking about her fiancee and Elaine says, "Maybe a Dingo ate your baby". -- What is that in reference to or did she just make it up I thought I heard that line somewhere else..

Thanks,

(email reply if possible)

Your wrong it's not from a movie!

Elaine is in fact indirectly refering to a true story about a couple in Australia wich was on camping in the forrest when a dingo came and stole their baby. The couple was arrested and jailed because the court did'nt believe their story about the dingo which stole their baby.

Later it was proved that what they told in the court was true.

It is correct however that there was made a film about the incident with Meryl Streep in the leading role.

Presumed that a dingo took the baby.

The father was found guilty of being an accesory after the fact, but never jailed. I believe he got a suspended sentence.

No, later it was decided that the evidence used to convict them was inconsistent and should never have resulted in a gulity conviction. They were both granted a pardon and were given a huge payout of $..exact amount I cant recall. Mother left australia to marry an American and now lives in the states.

If you are really interested in reading about the very complex forensic evidence that was used against them, and how it was found to be later flawed, get a hold of Justice and Nightmares by Paul Wilson...it's an Australian book and a great read.

damn . . . chill out a little! perhaps some people out there in cyberspace haven't been reading the Seinfeld newsgroup from the beginning. What happens when your child asks you a question that has already been asked. Perhaps....J......you need to just let others answer the question if you only can ridicule in your answers.

To be exact the movie's name is cry in the dark telling the story of a woman who was camping out at ayers rock in australia. She left a baby in a caravan for a while and then found that the baby was missing. The mother claims that the baby was eaten by a dingo, but the courts see her as innocent. to this day people still do not know the truth, the thing is dingoes don't eat people.

Taken by a dingo, not eaten! That has never been established

but the courts

No the courts saw her as guilty, but later on she and her husband, who was given a suspended sentence, were pardoned due to flaws in evidence that originally convicted them...they got a huge pay out too.

But, yes, people still do not know what happened. Even today Australians have an opinion about what really happened. From what I ahve read i would say that the baby was taken by a dingo but there was human involvement too dispose of evidence. i dont think the parents are guilty. Either way, they should never have been convicted as the evidence used against them was very very shabby and inconsistent.

I am not sure but I think their was an actual story of some lady in Australia or somewhere where a dingo took her baby away and eat her and they accused the mother of killing her.She was convicted then let loose later after further evidence was discovered.

It's a reference to a Meryl Streep movie where she is woman is accused of killing her child and Streep contends a dingo carried her child away and ate it. Elaine is a big Streep fan!

I don't whether this has been completely answered (dunno how old this thread is). But the movie info is:

Title: Cry in the Dark, A (1988) (Also Known As: Evil Angels (1988))
Produced by: Warner Brothers / Cinema Verity
Starring:
	Meryl Streep as Lindy Chamberlain
	Sam Neill as Michael Chamberlain

Plot: Based on the true story of Lindy Chamberlain during a camping trip to Ayer's Rock in outback Australia, she claims she witnessed a dingo stealing her baby daughter Azaria from the family tent. Azaria's body is never found. Police note some apparent inconsistencies in her story, and she is charged with murder. The case attracts a lot of attention, turning a simple investigation into a media circus, with the public divided in their opinion.

Hey, wait a minute... my middle name is "Azariah"... I think I was raised by Dingoes!

the name azariah means sacrifice to god, so it is pretty ironic is lindy chamberlain murdered her baby

I'm not so sure about "Azariah" meaning sacrifice to God. I don't see any roots that refer to God or sacrifice. I do see something like 'aza' meaning 'for' and 'raea' meaning 'seeing' but that could be a stretch.

Wait a minute, I see what you're saying but I think you're incorrect-- the word you are thinking of is: 'azkara' (pronounced: az-kay-ray) which means 'a memorial; that part of an offering which was destined to bring the sacrifice to the rememberance of God' (cf. Langenscheidt)

This word is pronounced 'ah-zuh-r-eye-ah'

** I'd be happy to hear from one myself.
On the basis of all the Hebrew I know (from
living in Israel for 25 years) the name refers
to help from God, not to a sacrifice.

As for that Streep attempt at an Aussie accent - she must have had her fingers up her nose, and her lessons in New Zealand or South Africa!!!. I think Elaine did the impersonation very well.

I think that it turned out the major inconsistencies surrounding this case, were in the evidence tended to convict the accused.

What's your source - this was read out on all of the TV news editions of the day, but I thought it was later found to be a misinterpretation of fact. Remember, there were a few attempts to tie the families non-mainstream religion to bizzarre rituals. Truth was simply not the prime objective of the media in that case.

As for a Seinfeld tie-in: What happens when it is finally proven that George is or is not Jewish? Will some of you suddenly find that he is not so funny any more, while others of you will suddenly realise that he is a scream?

The case of the Chamberlains (dingo - baby) was based very much on ingnorance and misconceptions of a families religious beliefs. Will George be hung out in the same way if it is proven that he is or is not a particular religion.

Finally - the previous owner of my German car was Jewish, so the Mercedies "proof" is not conclusive. Some Jews drive German cars - some do not.

That's about it. The reference is to the Azaria Chamberlain case, which occurred in Australia in about 1980. (Azaria was the baby. Lindy Chamberlain was the mother). It was a case of the conviction being overturned after further scientific work showed that the original forensic evidence was rubbish rather than additional evidence being found. In Australia the case is as famous as the OJ Simpson case is in the US, and it has gone on and on and on. There have been three inquests (the last of which was only a year or two ago), a trial, assorted appeals etc etc). The most recent legal verdict was an open one (ie after all this, the legal system has no idea what actually happened). A film was made about the case (starring Meryl Streep) under the title 'A Cry in the Dark'.
