Jerry will get married and the show will shift to depicting married life for the main characters over multiple seasons.
Fans debate whether Seinfeld could continue as a series about married life after nine seasons of single-life comedy, with most skeptical that marriage storylines would work as well.
For 9 years, Jerry and the gang indulged in every aspect of the "single life" until the writers ran out of "single life" material.
Now that Jerry's getting married, look for a 9 year sit-com of "married life" Jerry, "married life" George, "married life" Elaine & . . . Kramer . . . well, God love him, I don't think he'll ever find someone to marry.
Sounds like a good idea to me. I think after six months of married life, Jerry will be looking for any excuse to get out of the house and this new sit-com is the ideal answer.
I don't think that would work. To me, what made "Seinfeld" so funny was the trials of single life, including dating. That was something that many viewers could relate to. Is it any wonder that Susan was killed off before she and George got married? When George got engaged, I predicted that he would never actually marry, and I was right. George and his hang-ups with different women were much funnier than George's stable relationship with Susan. And I honestly can't see any of the Seinfeld characters marrying - they're just too selfish and immature for marriage. That selfishness and immaturity helped to make them so funny.
Also, since "The Cosby Show," NBC doesn't seem to have recognized that sitcoms about married couples can be funny. I can't think of one current NBC sitcom that isn't centered around single people, and many NBC dramas also have mostly unmarried people. If a Seinfeld "married" sitcom happens, it would probably be on CBS, which has had success with "The King of Queens" and "Everybody Loves Raymond" - both very funny shows centered around happily married couples.
Actually, it MIGHT create some groundbreaking comedy to see what happens when someone like that DOES try to get married and have a kid. Do they bust up? Do they muddle through? Do they have a clue? There's a whole new set of comic possibilities for the new milennium in that, since it probably speaks to the kind of marriage not only Jerry but millions of others are getting into in real life.
