Why does Jerry Hate Newman?

Does anyone know why Jerry and Newman hate each other?

My guess is that they are such complete opposites of each other.

Real Jerry was once asked why TV Jerry and Newman hate each other. He simply shrugged and said, "Superman had his Lex Luthor. He's [Newman is] mine."

There you go. Beyond that, even the cast and crew really don't know and probably haven't bothered to wonder about why Jerry and Newman hate each other. I have a feeling that it goes beyond a basic personality conflict, though, b/c Jerry's mom hates Newman too...remember? In the episode where Jerry and his girlfriend were making out during "Schindler's List" (I forget the title), Helen opens the door, sees Newman, and delivers her own "Hello, Newman." She did it well, in my opinion...I thought it was great that she hated him too, for reasons unknown.

You forgot to mention that Jerry is jealous of Newman, as Newman can act and not merely pad out 23 minutes of smirking and grinning through one's lines and collecting an outrageous salary

Newman is not an actor. Wayne Knight is. And Jerry happens to be a wonderful actor - not one of the best, but he certainly can hold his own. He's better than a lot of the people out there. As for his salary - well, I think I'll leave that one alone. :-)

In an age where pro sports athletes can earn millions for mediocre performance, and people like Leo DeCaprio can demand 8 figures for a movie appearance, I don't think we have any right to criticize Jerry.

Sure he made a lot, but he absolutely excelled at what he did.  Nothing
wrong with that.

Newman the character brings too much to the show for me to hate him. I thinks he's very humourous. Having said that, I don't think a guy like Newman would be my friend in real life since he seems to have a dangerously volotile streak. (postie, you know.) I should hasten to add that Wayne Knight is fantastic in the role, and, like Jason Alexander, has to put up with humiliation and degradation just to act the part.

Newman doesn't hate his job. Sure he complains a lot, but he also gets off on the power of the Post Office. He loves revealing deliciously secret 'inside information', and he socializes with his fellow mailmen. No, I think Newman enjoys being a Postal employee.

For the most part, but don't forget about the woman Jerry dumped because she dated Newman and HE broke it off with her. Newman was also attracted to Babs Kramer, and he bagged her shortly after.

Actually, like Jerry told Ramon in "The Pool Guy", he doesn't have room in his life for any more friends. Four is enough. Again, Newman pals around with Kramer, and has many Postal worker friends (at his birthday party in "The Millenium")

I find Newman to be a very endearing character. Maybe rough around the edges, and grating when it comes to how he interacts with Jerry, but who did Elaine and Kramer go to when they had the dispute over the bicycle? And who did they turn to when Lainie couldn't get any sleep because of the barking dog?

BTW your french was near perfect this time except for "le person" which should read "la personne". The word "person "in french is feminine..

I would never even try to underestimate Dave's wealth of knowledge on the show from the trivial details to the general grasp of the concepts behind the Seinfeld universe but we can't always recall everything perfectly. I've posted a few weeks ago during a movies thread asking if" Firestorm" was from " The Engagement" (Knowing it was)and Dave's reply was positive but the Seinfaq has "Firestorm" with "The Pool Guy ". Sorry if I offended anyone , I' m still new at this Usenet / Internet business.

C'mon guys. It's like you're speaking about me behind my back right to my face. I am not at all familiar with the intricacies of the french language, but the above paragraphs are peppered with my name. I hope it's something good. :)

Thanks Mo. I sometimes impress myself with what I've been able to retain from the show, but alas, I am certainly not above the occasional mistake, and I don't mind having my errors pointed out to me. In fact, I encourage it. Ask Mike TNG, he's nailed me on a number of missed or misreported details.

Well, due to a bizarre logistics issue, updates to the FAQ are made on a monthly, sometimes bi-monthly basis. The document itself resides on my partner/co-author's page (I have no web site). I send him whatever I come up with as I compile it, and he collects everything I send. Then, when he can find the time, he incorporates all of the new/updated material at once. This means that if you give me FAQworthy information, depending on the timing, it may take some time for it to make it into the document, but it also means that each update contains plenty of new information. There's no sense in putting out a new revision if it only has one little update from the previous one, right?

So in closing:
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Remember, I'm only human.

You're right. When I was thinking back on "The Betrayal", I only thought of FDRs party, where he made the original death wish. I forgot about Newman's party, where Kramer tried to barter for Newman's birthday wish.

It goes back to when they were in high school together. Something about a spelling bee, missing underwear and a book called "The Tropic of Cancer." It is still a mystery.
