This week's show

Late last week I heard a TV critic on National Public Radio describing his picks for best new shows for the fall season. (He liked Picket Fences and the new Paul ?Reiser? comedy that'll be in the time slot after Seinfeld this year.) He described the preview he'd seen of the Seinfeld season premiere (that's what he called it--wasn't the LA sequence the season premiere?) as the best thing he'd seen for the new season. The critic reports that Seinfeld looks like it'll pick up more of a plot element this year. The new show (an hour long) has Jerry being asked by NBC to pitch a TV comedy. The idea that they (George and Jerry) come up with is to do a show about "nothing." You know, things like sitting around diners and talking. Hard to believe that an idea like that would ever be seriously considered by a network, but that's what the new season of Seinfeld will be about. A TV show about making a TV show about nothing.

The clip they played sounded great. Jerry and George sitting around discussing Dpossible formats for Jerry's new show and George says,"It could be a show Dabout us." Jerry: About us? Doing what? George: You know, just us, sitting around doing what we do. Like that time we waited fro a table in the Chinese rest restaurant. We could have a show about that.

Jerry: Who would be in it?

George: Well I could be in it.. I'd be one of the charactericters.

Jerry: Youd be a character?

Well anyway it sounded very funny. The above quotes are only parapharased. And also, I must apologize for my lousy format, but I'm not so smart about computers.

I too saw a promo on NBC about this. I only caught the part where the announcer says something like, "and Seinfeld gets his own show"

or somehting to that affect. My apologies for the incompletteness. If someone has seen the whole thing, maybe you could clear up my innaccuracies(like spell- ing for example). They also discussed it on Entertainment Tonight. The critics that they(John and Liza) talked to thought that Home Improvement(which moved to Wednesdays opposite Seinfeld, bummer) would suffer. Jerry also said that he didn't think that his 'show would suffer because people who like the show, watch the show.'(that's almost a quote, that's why I only used the half quotes.heehee.)

what about us?

Boy, I hope the whole season doesn't revolve around this theme. I think such intense (but abnormal) self referentiality could hurt the show's believability.

There was a quote from Jerry in TV Guide about two months ago on the time switch of Home Improvement, and he said something like, "What am I going to do, anti-tool jokes?"

But now those of us who like both shows will have to get those VCRs going... and those of us who like to tape both shows for posterity, are in trouble. I haven't come up with a good answer to this one yet and tonight is my first test. I'm going with Seinfeld.

BTW, I've only read this group on and off so it's probably been discussed here before, but one of my favorite Seinfeld moments was the game show skit when he hosted Saturday Night Live. Like his question to "Chicken McNuggets" - "If it's the part of the McChicken I McThink it is, I don't wanna McEat it!"

Okay, I taped Home Improvement, watched Seinfeld. HI was great, as usual. I can really identify with the parenting/marriage themes of the show, being an employed married parent living in a house in the suburbs.

But to me Seinfeld was hilarious, although I have nothing in common with jobless single people living in apartments in a large city.

And how many people watched HI and then tuned in for the last half hour of Seinfeld? I think that HI will definitely suffer here - paired with Roseanne, that hour 8:30-9:30 on Tuesday was very watchable. But opposite Seinfeld - well - I think that move was a major league mistake by ABC.

Yeah, I know. I taped Seinfeld last night and watched Home Improvement. I'm hoping I can tape the Home Improvements in summer re-runs.

It's really annoying that there's hours of dreck on opposite each but two of three shows I make a big point of seeing( NEXP is the 3rd) are opposite each other. OH no they can't space out the good shows because they want to beat each other out to wring more $$ out for their advertising.

It is Tuesday nite and I just watch HI & Jerry ( yes the new ones ) 1.5 hours apart. I guess I might tape Jerry tommorow.
