man! i just watched "the pez dispenser" with their commentary!! WHAT COMMENTARY!????!

i think there was about 3 minutes of REAL discussion...

I'm guessing it was because it was so long ago that the episodes were filmed, that they forgot about the little events surrounding the filming. So they just resorted to watching along with us, the viewer. Which, personally, I don't mind listening to them occasionally cracking up [laughing].

Hoping that newer seasons on DVD have more dialogue in the commentaries, because they're, well... nearer for recall for Jerry, Dave, et al. That's if they 'giddyup already'.

Either drop the commentaries totally for the next releases, or ask them to prepare better!

Cherones and Azzari are good as well. It's usually the way that crew know more than cast, and can express it better. The David + Seinfeld pairing isn't totally without merit either, I've always got time for them.

jason alexander appears to be very intelligent, as well. during the "inside looks", his language, analogies, and recall are pretty impressive.

Agreed, completely. Julia Louis-Dreyfus comes off as the snottiest bitch I've ever heard in a commentary, and by far the most ignorant person. It's fine to be self-loathing of your appearances as an actor, but don't pretend that anyone wants to hear that, especially with the bad attitude she has throughout every one of them.

Even Larry and Jerry have little to say, and their continual "That was a tight episode," "Yeah, that was a good one... it hasn't dated at all" feel like nothing more than pats on their own backs.

The Inside Looks seem to have some nice inside material, but there isn't that much of it. Honestly, I don't care how the musical director made the Foleyed pianist flub in "The PEZ Dispenser"--it's really not all that interesting a story. Even Larry Charles surprised me, because I thought his stuff would be insightful, but his entire commentary on "The Library" gave about as much information as his 45 seconds on the Inside Look for the same episode.

And interesting stories seem to be lacking in the series in general. Maybe it's because no one wants to be confrontational, but I could definitely see Julia's ego getting in the way, or hearing more about Larry's recurring quitting, or SOMETHING. It almost makes me wish the set didn't have any bonus features at all, had I known the series was so boring behind the scenes.

Well Julia did mention how annoyed Michael could get if someone kept corpsing. The story about the guy who played Alton Benes being a nutcase was good.

I love the extras, love the effort they've made, love the boxset.

Point being? It's obvious that they improved. Nobody needs Jerry and Larry to point that out for them. Jerry particularly bothered me on the commentary for "The PEZ Dispenser" where he says something along the lines of, "Yeah, you know, we never had a problem coming up with stories or material." How boring.

Corpsing? I skipped over some of Season 2 because I just read the script collection, so there may be some stuff I've missed.

The Lawrence Tierney story was interesting, I'll give you that, but the moments of interesting stories have been few and far between.

The extras have been thussofar lousy.

The "How It Began" feature is decent, but the production values aren't. It seemed fairly rushed, and I'd have liked more input from Carol Leifer, (who prior to this release was publicized as the inspiration for Elaine). Larry David just *has* to be more interesting than he comes off as in these; the story of his becoming executive producer is good and I'm sure there's a dozen more.

The audio commentaries have been reprehensible in summation. If it was going to be the case that either so much was lost in memory or there just wasn't anything to talk about, they should have scrapped them--involving Julia, Jason and Michael wasn't all that necessary, in retrospect. These things aren't supposed to be self-congratulatory, they're supposed to have a purpose. Watch pretty much any Simpsons commentary to see how these are supposed to be done.

That's not an excuse. Listen to any Simpsons commentary by Al Jean and Matt Groening and you get a goldmine of tidbits.
