Jerry and Birthdays

In one Standup before the show Jerry talked about birthdays. It is about why you should, or should not celebrate your birthday - because you do nothing. Jerry says that you do nothing and you have birthday. I can't remember it but it was very funny and I need it for a birthday. You would do me a great favor, Volker

I can't reproduce it verbatim for you, but I'm sure someone here can. Anyway, basically the bit was mostly about your first and last birthday parties being much alike. You don't really know what's going on. It has to be totally planned for you by others who decide whom to invite--i.e. who your friends are and then they tell you: "These are your friends, tell them thank you for coming to your birthday party..."

That's basically the jist of the joke/bit IIRC. Anwyay, that's the best I can do off-hand... :)

There was also a great episode where George asks Jerry to "not be funny" because he's afraid his date will think Jerry's funnier and go see "his show" as Elaine put it. Anyway, the non-funny, introspective Jerry goes off on a depressing rant about b'days when George's date has to make a call to wish her Aunt happy birthday. I think that would make a really funny b'day joke/toast or whatever to recite it word for word *if* you've got a bunch of Seinfeld junkies for friends... :)

I'm not sure it's that one he means. There's one where Jerry asks why you bother celebrating a birthday since all you've done is not died in the previous 12 months. I think those are 2 separate bits.

I don't know about you, but I'm getting sick of pretending to be excited every time it's somebody's birthday, you know what I mean? What is the big deal? How many times do we have to celebrate that someone was born? Every year, over and over...All you did was not die for twelve months. That's all you've done, as far as I can tell. And those astrology things where they tell you all the people that have the same birthday as you? It's always an odd group of people too, isn't it?
