Drakes

Ahhh...but is there really such thing as "Drakes coffee cake?"

(either the Big Boy or the Junior)

Drake's coffee cakes are a New York thing...they were my snack food of choice when I was a kid. Yoo-hoo choclate drink is another big New York thing; I used to know kids who drank nothing but Yoo-hoo morning, noon, and night. I nearly died when the bubble boy's father said he was a Yoo-hoo delivery man.

We've had Yoo-hoo here in the Midwest for several years. My roommate got some snack cakes from Pennsylvania and they were Drake's brand. Not coffee cakes but Ho-ho's I think.

Drake's doesn't make Ho-Ho's. They make Ring Dings, Yodels, Devil Dogs, and Coffee Cakes. I may have left some out, but I'm sure about the others. We had them all the time when we were growing up. When this episode ran last year, I had to have my mom in Connecticut send out a box of Drake's coffee cakes because you van't get them out here!!! ONly bad part of that was that they were the Jr's not the Big Ones.

There is the important difference between Drake's and Yoo-Hoo is that where one will eventually realize that Yoo-Hoo tastes like an aluminum can (or a glass bottle) and chemicals, where one will only come to appreciate Drake's more and more with age. (I for one managed to finish a bow of Funny Bones (chocolate coating on chocolate cake filled with peanut butter!) over about a day.)

There certainly is. I can't recall the size names, but where I grew up (Maine) Drakes devil dogs and coffee cakes were all I knew (never had a Twinkie until college!) The coffee cake is covered with a dry, crumbly brown suger-cinnamon-walnut topping. Yum yum!

I remember my older brother coming home one day with an armload of Drakes cakes. He said the Drakes delivery truck driver gave them to him and his friends because they were old (the cakes, that is). Knowing my brother, that prob'ly ain't quite how it happened! :-)

Those Drake's Coffee Cakes are sure favorites up here in Maine.
