Kramer's (Lack of?) Employment

I have always wondered about Kramer's source of income. I imagine the apartment building they live in cannot be inexpensive. Kramer doesn't work, as a matter of fact, after he and Newman and Elaine kidnapped the dog and got arrested he was bemoaning the fact that this was now on his permanent record and now he could never get a job. Anyone have any insights?

Kramer: "Oh, I get by..."

Which means he just does anything to get money, large or small. Mostly small-time stuff probably, like his horse carriage driving or half-baked business ideas like the 'self-service' pizza parlour. He's always trying to work out new ideas, like the 'Beach' fragrance...

When my cousin went into the Army, the second day in basic his whole platoon got in trouble and their drill sergeant made them do handstands against their lockers and do shoulder presses in that position.

One guy lost his balance, fell and cracked his kneecap into pieces. He got rushed to the hospital, was given surgery, spent six weeks in rehab and then was given a medical discharge. Since the drill sergeant wasn't supposed to make them do exercises like that, they gave the soldier a monthly disability check and full pay and owe it to him for the next twenty years.

Two days in the Army and he gets to not have to work for the next twenty years. This is how I imagine Kramer pays the bills.

Pendant Publishing went under before Kramers book was published. Now that I think of that, it seems a bit strange; Kramer started and ended a promotional tour on Regis and Kathy Lee, and the book wasn't published? In any case, I recall Kramer being upset at Elaine, since she ruined the take-over plans to save Pendant with her Ju-Ju-Bees.

I think that is just another of Jerry's sarcastic remarks. I don't think that it has anything to do with Kramer actually having any real training in pediatrics!

Yes but early on there was an open apartment above Jerry's. Elaine was going to rent it, then she spoke to the supers of the building- two gentlemen, one of whom spoke Spanish. I don't remember Kramer being mentionned as the super.

You are not the first person to say that. I think this impression came out of 'The Implant' episode. Consider:

Early on, Kramer says he misses the warm weather of L.A. Kramer: Oh man, I wish I could get away! Jerry: Real busy now down at the office? Kramer: Nah. (pause) Huh...?

In the following scene Jerry, Kramer, and George are in the sauna talking about women: George: I know what the problem is: I like her too much. That's why I can't make a move. Jerry: You put her on a pedestal. Kramer: I put them on a dental chair!

So you see, if you miss the sarcasm in the first exchange, you are left with the impression that Kramer works in some sort of office. Couple that with his dental chair remark, and viola! Kramer is a dentist.

Of course, we now know that Kramer has no regular job, and no obvious means of support. Actually, Kramer as a dentist is one of the scariest things I can possibly think of!

Didn't Mr. Lipman went belly up, because of the merger, he didn't want to shake the Japanese hand afraid of passing germs to him. The Japanese felt he is being insulted because Lipman decline the hand shake. That leads to Ky-boshing the merger. The coffee book didn't get taken off. Also Kramer's interview with Regis & Co. ended with Kramer spraying the Hostess ( Kathie ?) with coffee!

In a rerun last night, George said of Kramer: "Fantasy Campp, his whole life is fantasy camp.(somethin) (somethin) fall ass backwards into money, mooch off yourfriends and have sex without dating..." or something to that effect. I know its a little amorphous, but doesn't that suggest that he inherited it? Or, more likely, it only refers to the enormous amount of money he had won at the track a couple weeks before...

In the show where Kramer manipulated Elaine, Jerry emntioned K was trained in Pediatrics. That was the show Elaine picked up the bike from a hook and fell over her. Jerry picked up a girl that always appear in same dress.

He's probably a bandleader. Ozzie Nelson was.
