I saw on an interview with the owner of Tom's that the reason that only Restaurant is included in the outside shot of "Monk's" is so that NBC doesn't have to pay a dime to the owner of Tom's. NBC didn't even notify anyone of the use of that establishing shot...due to the lack of any absolute identifying marks (ie the "Tom's" part of the sign). Presumably there are literally hundereds of restaurants in the New York area that have the word "restaurant" in their respective titles.

Why does Seinfeld do this when they have no qualms about mentioning Snapple or Pez or any of the other hundreds of brand-name stuf mentioned?
