Weiss is an ass with a negative political bent. Easier to criticize and write to destroy the creative and successful in society than to be one. Here is a quote from a review of his little book. "...Author Weiss skewers politicians, lawyers, journalists, and socialites with equal panache, ..."

This writer takes punches from behind people's backs - ignore him.

I read both articles, and my reaction to the second was, "Where does this guy come off?" It was such a clear example of a guy having an opinion and then trying desperately to justify that opinion.

It is fine not to like CYE, it is clearly not meant to appeal to all tastes. But the way he justifies his feeling that the show is unworthy (or, as he puts it, heartless) while, at the same time trying to prove Seinfeld had tons of heart in comparison was just ludicrous (did this man actually watch Seinfeld? Did he ever get the point to it?)

I actually became more and more insulted as I read deeper into it. The only reason I finished it was out of morbid curiosity-- akin to watching paramedics carting off dead bodies after a car crash.

I am not familiar with the author, but, as someone who has written both criticism and opinion professionally for a number of years, I want to read nothing else by this guy!

That was just a cute way to end his piece. He'd said earlier that CYE is critically acclaimed or something. But obviously neither work 100% for him.

His comments about the Crazee Eyez Killa (sp?) episode being just another schwarzer joke was off-target. One of the things that CYE does best is deal with race relations. Further, CYE's LD character is really no worse than George. Exploiting his mom's death to duck social commitments is pure George all the way. And further still, LD isn't shoving his success in our collective face. His self-portrait is very unflattering.

My big complaint about CYE this year is that it seems like more of the same and the formula isn't wearing well.

I think he has identified a truth though he doesn't explain it very well: why is CYE's LD character cringe-inducing while George was LOL funny? Yes, there was great synergy between Jerry and Larry but it wasn't because JS had soul! On the show they conceded how shallow he was. But, for some reason, the show overall had this great effervescence so George never made it grim or depressing.

Where did that fizz come from? It couldn't have just been from the laugh track! Personally I think it was precisely because Jerry was so shallow, not because he had "soul". Maybe it's Jason A's soul that's responsible for George being easier to take...?

Yeah, but he wasn't really hitting below the belt. It's a little disconcerting, though, that he got the "no hugging, no learning" credo from the Oppenheimer hatchet job as anyone reasonably knowledgeable about the show would be familiar with that already.

Also, why were "macher" and "schwarzer" italicized while "schlepper" was not? All threr are Yiddish words.
