I think the Costanzas expected it to be served before or with dinner. Recall that they complained afterwards that they weren't served cake for dessert; thus they expected cake, not the bread, for dessert.
I said the same thing myself, in posting "what did you think of the rye" I said, to me it looks like a challah! I've never seen braided rye before...
