Thread discusses technical compatibility of playing US NTSC-format Seinfeld videotapes on European PAL VCRs and televisions, with mixed reports of success depending on equipment.
I'm very tempted to buy tapes of the show, but they all come from the US, which has a NTSC system, while in Europe the system is PAL. So does anyone know what will happen if I try to watch a NTSC tape on a PAL vcr? Bad image, bad sound, impossible to watch, what?

It depends on the TV and VCR. When I was living in Europe I had a Sony VCR and TV, and that combination worked fine. But the connection had to be made using a SCART connector.

Ended up being quite expensive to convert the tapes over but I figured it was well worth it (for these concerts that is) but I wouldn't waste 2 cents on ANY sitcom - even one as good as Seinfeld. Just tape them from the telly when they're on - that's what I've done in the past.

Most VCR�s today convert the NTSC-signal before outputting it to the TV-set. By the way, most new TV�s handles NTSC perfect. I have Philips� 32 PW 8504 Widescreen connected to their S-VHS VR-969. WORKS PERFECT, TO SAY THE LEAST!!!! PONTUS, sweden

It is possible,yes.Europeans PAL vcr s canplay NTSC system. I myself have SonySLV-811 wixhcan playback NTSC onPAL tv .Vieorecorders (PAL) make playback NTSC 4.43. It is modificate wich made looking NTSC on PAL tv ,also you will find NTSC3.58 that kind NTSC is pure American or Japan tv system for looking that kind you must have on your tv possibility for 3.58 that is on AV connectors (Euro-Scart socket), look on your tv manul book and there you can find does it your tv have NTSC 3.58 or not. NTSC 3.58 is necessary for DVD because DVD players European are PAL and NTSC, but 3.58 pure American standard.For example ,if you watch NTSC DVD disc on only PAL tv you will not have colours. For watching video are little different because videorecorders mostly all biger labels like SONY ,PHILLIPS,JVC,HITACHI can play NTSC on PAL tv . So that kind of reprduction4.43 made possible watch NTSC tape on PAL tv. If you buy any US Tapes just be sure your VCR can play NTSC. I' have a couple of VCR from which only one is able to play NTSC Tapes. Just go to a Videostore get an American Import Movie and try. If it is working i guess you'll be a lucky man. I have just gotten The complete Seins in english and PAl Format. unfortunatly I cannot give you the source!! Well, anyway I'm looking for a complete collection in NTSC because the SoundQuality of my Tapes is rather poor due to the Transfer from NTSC in PAl format! Good Luck

As many people already suggested, have a look into your VCR's manual whether it can play NTSC tapes. If it does not, the picture will be black/white (since NTSC and PAL are color standards).
