I dunno why, but one of my favorite running gags through part of the season was with Kramer and the coat. He would always run into Jerry's and lock the door, while some guy came and ounded on it yelling about Kramer returning the coat. I forget the circumstances, but just thinking about Kramer's hysteria running into Jerry's place for something like saving a God-awful ugly coat has me rolling. Someone refresh my memory... Who's coat was it? And how did Kramer get a hold of it?

The jacket. The jacket belonged to Kramer's mother's old boyfriend. She gave the jacket to Kramer, because he liked it. When his mother broke up with the boyfriend, the guy came after Kramer to get it back. This was a long running subplot through that season. Especially when Kramer found out the boyfriend died, he shows up at the apartment with Elaine, to have Elaine convince landlord to open the apartment, because she was his daughter. Then that way Kramer could get the jacket.
This is one of the best subplots, like the Hennegins and Vanderlay.
I actually think there _IS_ a statue of limitations regarding coats left in former friends' closets...
Kramer was correct.

I remember reading somewhere that the jacket thing started by accident... Jerry was ad-libbing during a taping and asked Kramer about the jacket. They then decided to use it in other episodes.
Anyone else remember reading that?

The coat used to belong to a man who dated Kramer's mother. It was supposed to endow the wearer with incredible luck with women. I believe the man left it in Mrs. Kramer's apartment when he went to jail. That's how Kramer got it. Eventually the man (whose name escapes me) did get it back from Kramer. The episode where Kramer tries to retrieve is hilarious.
The coat belonged to Kramer's mother's ex-boyfriend. Kramer was unwilling to return the garment because he thought it had 'babe-magnet' powers.
