I was watching "The Revenge" the other day and noticed that before Wayne Knight became involved, they just used a voice for Newman. In "The Revenge" Newman was threatening to kill himself and he had occasional conversations with Kramer. I'm glad Knight got the part of Newman because he is truly hilarious in Seinfeld.
So, I was wondering in what episode we see Newman (Knight) in the flesh?
BTW: "The Revenge" is episode 12
Newman next appears in episode 32 'The Suicide'.

I watched The Revenge the other day when in Australia - on Channel 10, and the voice definitely wasn't Wayne Knight, and so must have been Larry David. For some reason, they must have the original tapes rather than the syndicated ones.

Yes, here in Australia we get the original episodes rather than the syndicated ones. From what I hear about syndication, I think we're better off. It is Larry David's voice being Newman in THE REVENGE. You can also hear Larry David's voice off screen on the aeroplane in THE AIRPORT. He's the one who ordered the Kosher meal and got Elaine's.
Further to this, we get the original Frank Costanza in THE HANDICAP SPOT. I believe the reshot theses scenes for syndication with Stiller.

One things that bugs me about this early Newman episode isn't that the voice doesn't match. It's the description of Newman that doesn't match. First, Newman has never been suicidal. And most of all, the things Kramer says about him doesn't make sense "No job, no women". As we all know Newman is a proud worker of the US postal service.

When they decided to make Newman a seen character, they decided to give him a job and everything, even though that contradicted Newman (as he was as an unseen character).
