Birds on pier - May 16

The scene with Jerry sitting on a bench on a pier, with birds in the foreground which fly away as he approaches the camera, seems very familiar. I'm fairly certain that it is a reference to a scene from a movie, but I can't place it. Can anyone help?

I was sort of thinking of "The Truth About Cats and Dogs" but that may be because of the woman (Jeannie).

It's exactly the same location where George was at the beginning of the season when he decided he wanted to marry Susan. The staging of the scene was exactly the same.

I haven't checked the tape yet, but I'm almost certain the other couples they showed Jerry watching were the same couples they showed George watching before he asked Susan to marry him.

Well, I might be able to help. If you recall, George had a very similar scene last year when he finally decided to ask Susan to marry him. You may be thinking of this episode.

Yep, was wondering if it went beyond some general imitation (camp) of a genre I seem to recall seeing over years of movie watching. Ha. There may have even been a similar scene in one of the Deadly Weapon films.

That's it! Thanks! For some strange reason, I was picturing it from a Tom Hanks movie. I kept trying to place it...Sleepless in Seattle? Forrest Gump?

In any case, the original scene with George made something of an impression on my memory, although not as striking an impression as it should have (since I didn't remember the source).

The original, as I vaguely remembered it, impressed me because I wondered how long it took to set up...getting the birds arranged in the right position to fly off into the camera when disturbed. (Probably just "found art." Throw some bird feed down and see where the birds land. Nevertheless, it was effective.)

I think the setting was the park or an ice skating rink.

I don't know about a movie, but didn't George decide to propose to Susan on the same pier, same shots of couples, the birds, etc, etc...?

I thought the same thing when I saw it. I was sure that it was from a movie. The person I was watching it with said it was like a scene from one of Paul Reiser's early comedy tapes when he is having a fantasy sequence about a mysterious woman. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

They did this with George in the season premiere this year.

All I can donate is that it isn't a pier - it's the boardwalk at Coney Island in Brooklyn.

Its familiar because its the EXACT same scene they used when George decided to marry Susan...right down to the people that were on the pier.

It is a reference to the show where George decides to ask Susan to marry him.

Not only is it a reference, but I think it's the same footage! The three couples Jerry was watching were the same ones George saw.

A funny touch, I thought.

George went through the exact same scene in the season premiere. That was when he ran off and asked Susan to marry him.
