Redeeming bottles in Michigan

Remember the episode where Kramer and Newman go to Michigan in the USPS stepvan to redeed bottles? Well I've done the math and it works for me(I live in a neighboring state) How does this work? I mean if I pull up with hundreds of dollars worth of bottles in my vehicle that does not have MI plates, what do they do? They can't limit it to residents only because of all of the tourist trade they do. I have several friends that own apartments/bars that would probably pay to have the stuff taken away and save on dumpster fees and I could then make money on the other end redeeming the bottles 45 minutes away!

Hey, I admit it I'm cheap, but if it brings in a couple of hundreds bucks a week it's worth it!

So if anyone on this group is from Michigan, please let me know how the redemption process works.

They go by the barcode of the bottles actually sold at the store. You feed the bottles into a machine and it figures out how much money you get back. It probably really wouldn't work the way it is shown on Seinfeld.

How can they tell what store you purchased them at? I mean c'mon are they going to put different UPC's/barcodes for each store? What do you do in the case of beer which is sold in 6/12 packs but the bottles get fed back into the machines?

This whole thing seems like a tremendous hassle, but I can sort of see why they do it. I am assuming that the machines are similar to those used everywhere else for aluminum cans.

It is a hassle! I don't live out there anymore, but there would always be a few that the machine wouldn't accept. I guess they kept track of all the barcodes from what was sold in town. It was pretty crazy. In California most people just put them in the recycling bin anyway!
