What is babka?

Could someone tell me what a babka is like? Is it cake or what?

Also, what the hell is a black and white cookie?

A babka is a kind of cake. I am sure that if you ask at a local bakery, they can sell you one. You can probably find a recipe for babka, and hence, a good description of it, by asking on the rec.food.recipes or rec.food.cooking newsgroups.

The closed captions had it as "bab-kuh". Even though I grew up listening to Deep Purple, Sabbath and the Who, I still have pretty good hearing. However, I often turn on the closed captions for certain shows. "Seinfeld" often uses Jewish or Swedish terminology and it helps to see the word. Often you'll be able to see comments that are inaudible under noise or laughter, and sometimes there is dialog that doesn't make it to the audio track -- that adds a lot to the show. Of course, there is often gratuitous cursing to be seen, but not heard. My favorite is in "The Ten Commandments" where Yul Brenner is getting mad and is about to go after Moses. As he is having his armour put on, he says, "Yurian Thebes will drive my chariot." The closed captions say, "Your Aunt Thebe (garble garble)"

I was SO thrilled when I had to move to NY for about 15 months and found that Babka actually DOES exist! One thing Seinfeld does is give us all a glimpse as to what we may be missing out on by NOT living in NY.

...although the image of someone snatching a sandwich out of Kramer's hand rather than helping him into the subway car is pretty accurate too...and sad. It was a nice place to visit, but I don't wanna live there!

Excuse me, but one does not have to go to NYC to buy babka. Babka is just a pastry which is a cross between bread and cake. Any decent bakery can make you a babka and if you have a recipe, making a babka yourself is not a big deal compared to many other pastry recipes.

But, for some reason, it does seem to be prevalent in the northeastern USA.

I recently went to a restaurant where they sold Babka (I think I already started one post by that line, but what the hell). So my father and I, who are great Seinfeld fans, ordered it and the waitress said they didn't have any. Neither chocolate nor cinammon Babka. What a bummer, huh? I also went one time to a bakery where they happened to sell Babka and I was dissapointed to find it it's just an ordinary cake. there's nothing very special about Babka, I'm very sorry to say...

Every Jewish bakery that I have been to in Los Angeles sells black and white cookies. I think that they are common in Jewish bakeries anywhere in the United States.

To the person asking about babka. It looks like a Bundt cake, but it has the texture of a crumbly coffee cake. I think the chocolate variety tastes like a chocolate chip danish.

I can tell you what a "black-and-white cookie" is. It's known as a "half-moon" where I live, and it's a cake-like cookie that's circular and flat on top and rounded on the bottom, as you probably saw from the one Jerry was eating. One half of the top is covered in a white almond-flavored icing, and the other half is covered in chocolate icing. Delicious...I recommend that everyone who hasn't try one to do so. :)
