Seinfeld Of Borg... The Show About Irrelevance

Did you see the way 7 of 9 was looking at me? She's a Borg, George, a Borg! I know, I know. Kind of a cute Borg, though.

I am Seinfeld of Borg. Not that there's anything wrong with that!

I am Seinfeld of Borg... Yadda Yadda Yadda... You will be assimilated.

I am Elaine of Borg. You are not Borgworthy. You will not be assimilated.

It's the Bubble Borg!

I am Seinfeld of Borg. Not if there is anything with that.

Those doves were assimilated!

If I have a son, I'll name him Seven of Nine.

Assimilation Now! Assimilation Now!

I like the name Borg. It sounds like a John Houseman name. "Hello Mr. _Borg_. It's nice assimilating you Mr. _Borg_."

You're assimilating independent George!

Have you assimilated your own domain?

The Soup Borg: No assimilation for you!

But I don't want to be a Borg!

What's the deal with species 8472? They're assimilated, they're independent... Why can't they make up their minds?

What the heck is this supposed to mean? I understand the Star Trek reference, and I get that they're all quotes from Seinfeld, but what the two have to do with each other and why this is (a) funny or (b) interesting escapes me...

It's cookie-cutter humor. One of the lower forms. Take any phrase, replace the noun with 'Borg' and replace the verb with 'assimilate' and many Star Trek fans will think it's the most clever think ever posted to UseNet.

Which is sort of sad, really. I mean, I've seen the occasional episode
of the newer shows and they seem to try to appeal to an advanced
audience. If they knew the real demographics they've been reaching,
maybe they wouldn't air the shows any longer.

But there are the same people who like both shows.

To wit: "You can't say that happened because it was never on one of the shows, in one of the novels written by approved-only people, or stated directly by Gene Roddenberry. Only those things are real."

Real? In a FICTIONAL show? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Talk about your "Infinite Diversity" -- as long as you CONFORM! I took the IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations) and made up my own little thing for those types of people -- One Damn Opinion. . .Roddenberry's. Oddly enough, the acronym for those people then becomes ODOR.

Huh ho! I bet this is reeeeeal funny in some other newsgroup.

FWIW, I can't think of Star Trek without thinking of William Shatner on
Saturday Night Live, berating the conventioneers to give it up and get a
life. When he asked Jon Lovitz (complete with foam Spock ears) if he'd
ever been laid, that was probably the funniest moment of his acting
career. Sublime.
Exquisite.

And if you ever ask a Trekkie about that skit, he'll turn red with rage all the way up to the top of his fake pointed ears.

That skit was so on target it was scary.

I was once berated for calling a Star Trek nut a "Trekker". He proceded to spend 10 minutes explaining to me the differences between "Trekkers" and "Trekkies".

Who new? Apparently, the "Trekkie" is far more serious about his
devotion.

Oh, you missed it? Here's a quick recap.

Phil Hartman played the host. He introduced a character (played by Victoria Jackson) who was the girl in Episode #xxx who, in the first two minutes, was turned into a cube and then crushed. Then it was some woman who was supposed to be James Doohan's wife. She had written a tell-all book which Hartman described as "sort of like living with a Mugatu" and that got a rousing response from the Trekkies. Then they sold a program from a 1975 convention and told about the various space-related drinks. Then Shatner came on and fielded a few questions. One guy (Kevin Nealon) knew about Shatner's new horse before even he did. Then he answered a couple of really stupid questions such as the combination to the safe in his quarters. Then he cracked and went off on them, telling them they were spending too much time watching a TV show that was done as a lark. Dana Carvey said something like, "So you're saying we should be spending more time watching the movies?" Shatner said, "No, that's not what I'm saying at all." He then launched onto Jon Lovitz, asking him if he had ever kissed a girl. Then he told them to move out of their parents' basements and "grow the hell up." There was murmuring in the assembled crowd and you could see Hartman and Shatner arguing and shoving. Shatner got back to the microphone and said, "Of course, that was a recreation of the EVIL Captain Kirk from Episode #xxx. So live long and prosper and ahead warp factor 9."

I thought it was hysterical, but a lot of Star Trek fans felt really betrayed. I suppose when you have an hero who is really popular and has a lot of support, you get upset when that person turns out to be a jerk, a really Slick type, and that's what happened. Most of the fans think those people ARE REALLY THE CHARACTERS THEY PORTRAY!

Now, I'd like to see an episode of Deep Space Nine where they find George Costanza frozen in suspended animation, still wearing his bathrobe and watching that ancient Old Earth style entertainment known as "television."

In article , [email] (D. P. Roberts) wrote:

I thought it was very funny too and I have more respect for Shatner since then. But I must tell you that I went to a star trek convention a year or so ago to see Shatner who was appearing that day. And, do you know that someone in the audience asked him if he really meant what he said on the SNL sketch! Do you know he apologized and said he certainly didn't mean to hurt anyone with the sketch, it was meant to be lighthearted and funny.

I just have to say that the really funny sketch they did on SNL that night was the sketch when Kirk had changed the Enterprise into a Restaurant and Carvey played Kahn, the restaurant inspections officer. "Kirk, I will have you cited." There is a heavyset Asian guy working in the restaurant, posing has Sulo. Kahn says "Sulo! What happened to you?"

Gee Dave, people in this group do this all the time - take a quote out of Seinfeld, like my 'COINCIDENCES' reference above [The Statue?] and turn it around in another context.

I though the Fuscilli Borg's list of Borg jokes showed some intellingece. First he had to know A LOT of Seinfeld references and then convert them to a Borg reference and keep the context of what the Borg is. 'I don't want to be a Borg' - is funny because the Borg are trying to assimilate. It would not have been funny as 'I don't want to be a Romulan'.

Just like 'I will name my son 'Seven of Nine' - that's clever to make the connection - Borg naming conventions - George's plan to use Mickey's number - and a complete team.

So Fuscilli Borg may be 'twisted' but I'll give him(her) some points for the post.

(And no! I will not post a list of Borg jokes) :-)

Not knowing the difference between a Borg and a Romulan, I couldn't tell you which would be considered funnier.

I understand the 'Seven' reference to George's potential future offspring, but the 'of Nine' part means nothing to me.

Ok, ok. It's better than the crap that spews forth from several others in this group. And much less annoying than the other crap that gets crossposted from those MTV shows. It's not nearly as foolish as the trollwork.

Fine. I'll admit that this thread does, in fact, have a place in this newsgroup. I'm just a little annoyed because this sort of thread ran through the Simpsons ng last year sometime, and it just got done to death. Sure, every single phrase ever uttered can be 'converted' in this manner, and some people wouldn't stop until EVERY PHRASE even spoken on the show was given 'the treatment'.

Maybe it's cute, to a point. But somewhere along the line, even a Star Trek fan has to say "Enough".

OK, How many of you (me included) Seinfeld and Star Trek fans recognized Clint Howard (Smog Strangler in the Trip II) as Balok? What did Balok serve Kirk?

The News Guy (Mike)'s - Seinfeld Lists site http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Studio/1955/ [Many Lists updated - a theme and George's .wav added] [email]

It was orange, called Tranya. Kirk encountered their huge ship, the Fesarius or Thesarius or something like that. Left a crewman called Bailey on board as sort of a cultural exchange. "The Corbomite Maneuver" was the episode.

You know, back in college, I used to be a Trek Junkie. I would pride myself on being able to identify which episode it was going to be within the first 3 seconds of the opening scene.

I've watched about half of TNG, maybe 5 episodes of DS9, and a couple of episodes of Voyager.

I guess I kind of lost my appetite for the show when I went to a convention and there were people there arguing about the reality of warp drive and how you can't REALLY go over warp 10 blah blah blah, LIKE IT WAS A REAL SHOW!

The ones who dress up in the uniforms scare me the most. Okay, so I dress like George Costanza, but so do a lot of other people.

Isn't this why Bill Shatner told his trekkies to ' get a life' on SNL.

BTW - is Capt. Kirk Jewish?

And this is different from this ng how? See "Is George an Adulturer," "Does Jerry have a middle name," or "Elaine's Vegetarianism." I for one prefer to believe that the characters, plots, etc. are indeed real.
