Does Jerry really hate Melbourne ?

I live in Melbourne (Australia), and someone told me that when Jerry was here a couple of years ago, he said that Melbourne was "the asshole of the world".

I don't disagree with him if he did say it, but I'm just wondering if he did or not.

It's weird too because about 10 years ago, my Parents went on a trip to Europe for 3 months. When they came back, my Dad showed me this pen he bought while over there. He said "It's what the Astronauts use in space.....it can write upside down because the ink is pressurized.......they've got everything in Europe, Australia has nothing......this country is the asshole of the world". Needless to say when I saw this on the episode, and then heard that Jerry said the same about Melbourne, I had one of those weird "am I really here" moments.

The short answer is yes, but the words were taken out of context by someone who wanted to paint Jerry in a bad light.

Basically, he was in Australia on a visit and making one of his standard observations. He said that if the Earth, as it's usually represented with the north facing up and the south facing down, that if the globe was a person and the equator was his beltline, and if the USA represented his face then Australia would be right about where his ass would be. ie. The asshole of the world. Granted, not his funniest joke, especially considering the audience, but some instigating reporter got ahold of it and next thing you know "Seinfeld calls Australia the Asshole of the World" makes the headlines in the tabloid rags.

I can't speak for your father's opinion, but I can say that you're somewhat mistaken about Jerry's. In fact, after hearing of the confusion, Jerry was very apologetic about the misunderstanding and spoke of his visit in glowing terms.
