ok, can we please come to a consensus on this inane topic of discussion so to just GET IT OUT OF THE WAY?

george - jewish (mom jewish, dad italian) jerry - Jewish ("if somebody asks me where's israel i don't fly off the handle!") elaine - not-jewish (sending CHRISTMAS CARDS TO CLERGYMEN/WOMEN) kramer - of undetermined faith and who really gives a shit anyway newman - see above

i know we could apply "who really gives a shit anyway" to all of the characters and their respective demoninations, but, this subject seems to be one of great interest to many of the people who post here. what i'm looking to do with this post is to basically end it as a topic of conversation. i think we should vote on george & elaine (since those are the only ones where controversy arises) and get this thing out of our hair.

This "who's Jewish" thread is interesting. I think the reason there's so much debate about whether Elaine, George and Kramer are Jewish is that the actors playing those roles are Jewish, and bring a lot of Jewish sensibilities and humor to their parts. The writers have gone out of their way to make the characters of Elaine and George non-Jewish, but they are not convincing. I'm Jewish, grew up in metropolitan New York, and George and Elaine just seem like Jewish characters. The only real hint Kramer gives as to whether or not he's Jewish, is in the cirmcumcision episode, he seems to know what's going on, as opposed to George or Elaine, who haven't a clue. Also, Kramer is usually a Jewish name, though I am sure there are non-Jews who have it, too.

Michael Richards, who plays Kramer, is Catholic. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

A few points:

The writer's have never made it clear whether George is Jewish or not? This keeps viewers interested.

If Kramer were Jewish, he would be unlikely to consider a Bris to be a primitive ritual as he does. Outside of NYC, Kramer is considered to be a very German name.

Michael Richards is not Jewish.

George joined the Latvian Orthodox Church. The priest confirmed him, although Sister Roberta did not give the benediction. Does this lack of the benediction cancel out his conversion?
