Emmys are a joke

Who's dick is Kelsey Grammer sucking. Frasier is not that good. It is the perennial winner for best comedy. Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce won the acting awards. Come on.

No really, I watch Frasier on occasion but it cannot compare to Seinfeld, either in writing or in acting, but consider that generally, most awards shows are fixed. Giving the Emmy to Frasier was the easy way out. They didn't have to put any thought into it.

"Hey, wanna watch some of the other nominees? Naaah. Just we'll give it to Frasier again. That frees up out afternoon to go play some golf."

I'm also reminded of the year, I think it was in the late 70's, where the SAG went on strike. 51 of the 52 Emmy nominees boycotted the awards show. So who do you suppose won for best actor? Powers Boothe, the only scab to cross the picket line and show up, won it for the Jim Jones/Guyana movie.

No, most of those awards shows are mere 'masturbation fests' where the
"chosen ones" slap each other on the back or jerk each other off or
whatever it is they do.  And I don't just say this because Seinfeld was
snubbed this year.  I've never cared much for any of the awards shows.
My tastes have rarely coincided with those of the voters.  Across the
board, whether it be books, movies, TV shows, with the exception of
Seinfeld, none of my favorites have ever been critically acclaimed
enough to win awards of any kind.  Watching awards shows is like peeking
into the gatherings of clubs I don't belong to.  What's the point?

I don't think so - it's all about taste. Frasier and Seinfeld have battled it out for years in the States. Over here *UK* - Frasier *ALWAYS* has good reviews and Seinfeld is only shown on Sky. It's annoying too because it's on at the same time as three other programs I want to watch...

Award shows are pointless but some are highly entertaining - I love watching the Oscars just because of the war it's presented (probably shown without any stops in the States but while there's no activity we always cut to the wonderful Barry Norman...). That's the ONLY award show I like and anyway - it's the least accurate of the lot. Titanic! - Best picture - bah, humbug...

Yes, he did come out. And it has nothing to do with his performance, or maybe it has everything to do with his performance. Niles is a rather effeminate character. Anyway, I'm not looking for an argument here, my post about DHP's sexuality was merely a joke in poor taste at the oral sex reference in the previous post. If you want to debate this ad nauseum, hit up the Frasier newsgroup.

I was being sarcastic. If you read more of my posts, you'll often find a twinge of humor here and there.

But it happened. Booth was the only one who would play their reindeer games, so he won the award. From that point on, I resolved never to take an awards show seriously. Not much has happened since then to change my mind.

Another good point.  11 awards??  Talk about the most intensive display
of bandwagon jumping since the Chicago Bulls signed Michael Jordan.

David Hyde Pierce was a candidate for John\Jack\Bob\Johnny\Jackie - well, whatever the name of that annoying fool played poorly by Leo Di Caprio. DHP would have been a lot better (could have been 1 more oscar too!)

British Awards failed to give Titanic any awards - shows how much we liked it! ;-)

All award shows are like that. The Oscars are a joke, the Academy basically awarded Helen Hunt an Academy Award for an over-glorified sitcom.

You're way, way off here! The Emmys are one of a handful of Awards shows that possess at least a modicum of objectivity. Emmy winners are determined by a number of committees made up of television professionals who must (repeat, must) watch each and every nominee to determine winners. Consider that sometimes certain categories have only two nominees, sometimes six (e.g., Actress in a Comedy this year)! That at least is some indication that nominations are not just handed out willy-nilly.

The Oscar ballots are mailed out mostly to retired industry professionals who see maybe three movies a year and usually give their ballots to their secretaries. The Golden Globe winners are chosen by only 50-60 people who are easily influenced by favors and gifts (hence Pia Zadora's win in 1980). Ever notice how often Golden Globe winners DON'T win Oscars (sometimes they're not even nominated, e.g. Madonna)? "Frasier's" only real competition this year was "Ally McBeal"; "Seinfeld" didn't have a chance. Most of the people on this newsgroup have spent all year bitching about how lame this season was but now they're astounded about why it didn't win the Emmy(?). Maybe it lost because, unlike "Frasier", it ran hot and cold all season. "Frasier" is consistently amusing (not hilarious, not dull) week in and week out. That's why it has deservedly won 5 Emmys in a row.

And, oh yes, I remember when Powers Boothe won his Emmy for the Guyana tragedy movie. He was absolutely, 100%, on-the-money the most appropriate choice to win for his riveting performance. He did NOT win just because he showed up--it doesn't work that way. He rather riskily elected to appear, and no doubt received quite a few cold shoulders from his peers in years to come.

I, too, have great difficulty sitting through all awards shows. I prefer just to read a list of winners in the paper the next day and that's good enough for me. But be fair: sometimes the winner has won because he, she or it is just plain deserving.

Yup.  And it wouldn't surprise me to learn that DHP, in real life, is

DHP is only type-cast. Would it interest you to know that he was one of the people considered for Jake\Jack\Jock\James - well, whatever the name of that horrible fool played by Di Caprio - pity, they could have won an oscar which they DESERVED....

Bear in mind that he also was in Wolf, Bright Lights - Big City, Little Man Tate, The King Fisher, Crossing Delancy, and in the TV shows (I think that the following are TV shows - being British I wouldn't know...;-) ), Crime Story, Spenser: For Hire, and The Powers that Be (definately a TV show). He was ALSO in the stage plays Beyond Therapy (that WAS a prophetic title if ever I saw one!), Hamlet, The Cherry Orchard (toured Soviet Union and Japan with that one...)...

When "Seinfeld" was just starting out in the early 90s, I couldn't believe the same man who portrays George Costanza also played the "villain" in "Pretty Woman". Whenever I see "PW" rerun on TV, I still marvel at Alexander's effortless menace. He was downright scary in the scene where he almost rapes Julia Roberts. This guy can act; no ifs, ands or buts.

Alexander is probably the comedy actor with most "faces", DHP on the other hand is almost embarrasing one-sided.

The Emmys have never been know for rewarding notoriously funny or popluar shows (save All in the Family) I too think Fraiser is dull (most of my friends are suprised at this as they think it would be my kind of show) but the Emmy traditionally have liked that sophisticated type of humour. I think Fraiser wins not so much as it is that good there really isn't that many other shows of that style that are on. (in the style ala Mary Tyler Moore, Cheer, Taxi sophisticated style)
