Most under-rated episode

Definitely the Barber.

I suppose it's possible some of you don't have Italian barbers for relatives.

The Barber was good. I am not sure what the most underrated one was but here are some choices: The Engagement (season opener 95-96) The Seinfeld Chronicles- not that bad The Gymnast The Apartment The Truth

I still laugh out loud at The Gymnast when Kramer is screaming in the men's room. May be due to the fact that I had an uncle who, when passing a kidney stone, dislodged it with a McDonals' coffee stirrer. Life's a journey, not a guided tour.

here are my picks for most underrated:

*bizarro jerry -- you have to have a fairly good knowledge of the show to get the jokes but i think this episode was really great. kramer at work was hilarious, ("what do you have in briefcase? crackers.") as well as Jerry and the "whole system breaking down." *the envelopes -- thought the death of susan was unfunny but i loved janeane garafalo as the female jerry. i think I liked these episodes because the show poked fun at itself (used irony?) in sly ways.

If I had to pickan under rated episode, I'd pick one of my favorites, "The Hot Tub." This is a classic Seinfeld episode, maybe Kramer's getting a hot tub in his apartment wasn't too funny, but Jerry feeling that it is his duty to make sure Jean Paul Jean Paul makes it to his race on time, Elaine having "Catalog Writer's block" and George getting an assignment from the Yankees to show some Texan's around NY, these people who refer to everyone as either a "Bastard" or a "son of a bitch," makes this episode a classic Seinfeld, at least that's as far as I'm concerned....

I don't know that they are so underrated, "The Bizarro Jerry" is a favorite amongst many people and it comes up often in lists/best of ect...

"The Invitations" is also pretty well rated if only for its controversial ending.

People rarely talk about "The Diplomats Club" or " The Sniffing Accountant" or "The Shoes" and they all are pretty funny episodes IMHO Needless to say there are others too.

I'd go with "The Race" as the most underrated episode. It seems to be generally liked, but with me, it's a true classic and has a spot on my Top 5 list, along with "The Outing", "The Opposite", "The Boyfriend", and "The Contest". The race plot was great- "I choose not to run!". I also loved the way it juxtaposed a Superman theme with a Communism theme. How many shows did that? I think my favorite parts of the episode was how Jerry got such a kick out of dating a girl named Lois, and when George "pretended" to run into Jerry, Lois, and Duncan in Monk's, and he claimed to have built the new addition to the Guggenheim, among other things.

In another thread someone referred to the Jimmy as under-rated. Is that right? I guess I ASSUMED that it was among the top rated (in my opinion, the very top includes The Jimmy, the Marine Biologist, and the Opposite. (some others too but these really stand out in my mind).

Kramer's portrayal of himself at the same time as being credible as mentally challenged was incredible; also loved the dentist part.

Well being half Italian, none of them are barbers but then most of them are dead so...anyway I hated the Barber, especially the plot involving Jerry, Newman, and the Barbers. George was okay in the episode, his plot was pretty entertaining, it almost saved the episode, almost, but not quite...

After I glommed (word?) together two story-lines that weren't in the same show (bosco) and mis-spelled mis-hit (is this REALLY a word?), I want to be sure I"m not doing the same thing again with the Barber. George's part in this is the Pensky file, right? I loved Elaine's joking grand jury indictment guess turing out to be correct. But I loved the barber plot too. Even tho I did NOT recognize it was a satire of an opera, as Mike pointed out. Even better. I loved the caricature of Italians. I agree that it was out of character for Jerry to have a dorky hair cut (as someone has mentioned) but a small inconsistency like that is not enough to detract for me, as long as the story hangs together and is a good one. I enjoyed the whole hair story. And it enriched my vocabulary. "It's an enzo". My hairdresser hated it. (It was too close to home and made her uncomfortable - she said a lot of hairdressers have this preoccupation about losing clients to someone better and clients are afraid to let her know they tried someone else. )

One of the actors grab Kramer hard to make a point when they were filming and Michael Richards came out of character to tell him he didn't like that. They must have cut that out.

You mean Kramer was improvising or he was really annoyed at being grabbed? I keep waiting for time to read some of the books that are out. I'm assuming that's where you picked this up?

I read that in an old Time magazine. I don't remember the date but I went to a library and looked it up in Reader's guide to Periodical Literature. I think the article was in a 1993 issue of Time. My memory is that Michael Richards was angry enough to come out of his character and was not improvising as Kramer. Anyway, find a library with old back issues of Time and use The Periodical Guide. Look under Television and then Seinfeld, I think. They have a Periodical Guide for each year so start with 1993 and go year by year. The Barber came out in 1993 I believe so 1993 would be a good year to start.

Actually, I keep meaning to see that movie to see if it adds anything to the episode.

BTW, someone asked about Elaine's part in this episode. I mentioned her because when they were sitting around trying to figure out why the guy who interviewed George ended abruptly with something like "I'd like to hire you BUT..." Elaine jokingly put in "We're under indictment by the Grand Jury and....." - which turned out to be the truth. cynth

That's funny, I never thought of that episode as underrated. It has always been one of my favorites, I love those truley "Nothing" episodes like the Dinner Party, The Subway, The Chinese Restarant, and The Parking Garage. Maybe it is because I live in New York, these episodes are so everyday life that I love them...either way the point is I love that episode...especially the whole black and white cookie thing, after all we should follow the cookie (especially in New York today, have you seen the news, how many times is Al Sharpton going to be arrested in these marchs over the entire cop thing...) this seems like a real "yada, yada, yada" moment...
