SchoolHouse Rock & Seinfeld

I was just on a search for the videos of SchoolHouse Rock from ABC, and realized that this has the potential for a Seinfeld episode.

Kramer walks in door humming the tune to "I'mm Just A Bill"

Jerry : "What's that you're humming? Sounds familiar."

Kramer : " Oh it's the Bill Song "

Jerry : "The Bill Song?"

Kramer : "Yeah, you knwo, the Bill Song"

Jerry : "Oh, the BILL song."

George (coming out of the bathroom)

Doorbell buzzes, it's Elaine, Jerry buzzes her in

Elaine walks in three seconds later (doesn't it always seem too quick)

Elaine : "What are you guys talking about?"

Jerry : "Kramer was just humming the Bill song."

Elaine : "Oh"

George : "What's the bill song?"

----SCENE CUT----

Entire episode continues with occasional references to, but no singing of, the Bill Song.

---End Credit Bit---

Jerry is in his car on a date with someone from episode and starts humming the Bill Song, to which she turns and says, "The Bill Song, I LOVE that song." They then start singing the song.

I like the idea, personally. The whole thing is very Seinfeld-esque and would probably have us all raving for the entire week after the show with the weekly person who calls it "the best ever, etc"

I know somebody was quick to post an insult to this attempt at free thinking by telling Evan not to quit his day job.

I am going to cast my vote in support of the outline drawn up by Evan.

I think if more people posted items like this to the group instead of all the repetitive garbage that gets posted 42 times like "that was so-and-so playing the parking attendant", then this group might actually become a bit more fun to read

Keep up the good work, Evan, perhaps you'll inspire more thought and less cereal box counting and credits-checking.

Doesn't sound like a bad idea at all! I've always wanted to try to write a "Seinfeld", but I never bothered because I knew I'd never be able to sell it (some friends of mine who graduated last year went to Hollywood with what they thought was a brilliant Seinfeld script - an entire episode devoted to George trying to get at an Almond Joy in a vending machine that's behind three Milky Ways without having to pay for four candy bars - and they couldn't get in the door). Maybe this would give me an excuse to try!

BTW, what's the fifteen bucks for?

Jerry was with George and got some Junior Mints from the machine, but George had to wait for his Almond Joy, never actually getting it.He probably waited as two people bought Milky Ways and then the third person came up to buy a Milky Way, but while at the machine the guy asked his date what she wanted. Meanwhile Kramer decides that he needs his lucky jacket back. He goes to the Cubans to try to trade for it back, but they tell him that they traded it to a guy at the Pakistani Embassy for a 1954 Mickey Mantle card (whose very mention cause Kramer to cringe.) Kramer then goes to the Pakistani Embasssy where he sees a man wearing his Jacket--it is Babu. He fights for the Jacket and ends up in the hospital--where he gets a spongebath from the girl.

But where is Lainey?

In the episode about the Candy Bar, how's this for an ending? George is waiting around during the entire episode, we cut to him every now and then and see him watching the people buy candy. Everytime they buy something other than the ones blocking his bar, he gets one of the George looks of frustration, walks away, then right back, followed by a cut to another scene.

At the end of the episode, the last bar in front of his is bought, he goes to buy his, when someone pushes in front of him, buys it, and walks away.

	George : "We're living in a society you know!!!!"

I remember a couple more Schoolhouse Rocks, sort of. There was one where a guy (named Zach, maybe?) sang a song about jobs and one funny one about physical fitness that had the line "The doing pushups in Peoria, they're jogging in LA!" There was also some things like "I hanker for a hunka cheese," and "Don't drown your food," and "Nutty Gritty, It's a snack you can eat," and the one that showed how to make popsicles with an ice tray. I don't know if these are SHR's or not but they're in the same vein.

All the "Schoolhouse Rock stuff started airing in the late Seventies, around 1977 or so (at least, that's the first time I saw them, and I'd been addicted to Saturday Morning Cartoons for years). Figuring Jerry is about 37 or so now (I haven't checked the FAQ recently to see if it has his age), he would have been 21 by the time they started airing, and Jerry just doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would have kept watching cartoons right through college. Which means, he would never have heard "The Bill Song" (or "Conjunction Junction" or "Lollly, Lolly, Lolly, Get your Adverbs Here" or any other classics).

I would think that he was watching cartoons back in 1974 when SchoolHouse started, and it is currently on again and follows The Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show here. I could be wrong of course. (NTTAWWT)

All I can remember from Conjunction-junction is something like:

Another school house rock song is THE Preamble to the constitution which sings the words of the preamble.

I remember having to memorize the Preamble in high school. Just about eveyone in the class began singing the "Preamble Song" from schoolhouse rock. I'm glad to see it back on TV!

WOW, I finally got to see THE episode, damn funnest thing on television. Alas, my VCR screwed up and I was unable to keep it for posterity.

ok, I happen to have the set on tape. My friend got them from his friend who is a schoolteacher. Interestingly enough, some of the ones from tv didn't make the tapes, like "Little Twelve Toes" which left my friend seriously bummed. I don't remember having seen some of them and I don't know if that's because some weren't aired much or because my five year old brain didn't understand them. So here's the list of the ones on the tapes. For those of you who are desperate, check your local Blockbuster Video in the kids section, the one near my house has a couple of the tapes.

Actually, the Bill Song is copyrighted 1974. And according to an episode that was filmed for the first full season (but aired the next season) Jerry was 36. That was 2 years ago so he is now 38 which means he was 19 when the Bill Song first came on.

Now, how can you say that "Jerry doesn't strike you as the kind of guy who would have kept watching cartoons right through college"? This is a guy whose life revloves around ceral and Superman. This is a guy who when Elaine asked when the overture would be, started singing the theme song to Bugs and (fill in the blank). This is a guy who put a Tweety PEZ dispencer on Elaine's leg. This is a guy who was watching Tiny Toons (but that was in the Contest so you could argue that that doesn't count). I think that the real Jerry still watched cartoons but probably the classic ones that are on the cartoon network, not the garbage that is on Saturday mornings now.

BTW, how many of you remember School House Rock? What are your favoraits in each category?

Hope this isn't too far off the subject but . . .

My wife and I were discussing how cartoons have gone to hell and how the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle/GI Joe generation wont know their adjectives, conjunctions, or anything about womens suffrage, the bill process or any other topic that School House Rock has drilled into the brains of the under 30 crowd.

However . . . while watching Saturday morning cartoons this past weekend I saw the adjective one!! Its the one where the girl goes off to camp and has to describe her adventures with, you guessed it, adjectives. Schoolhouse Rock is still around!!! There is hope for the education of America's youth.
