Hi! I'm a fan of the Seinfeld show and a frequent reader of this board. Can't say that I've seen all of the 101 episodes but I'm sure I've seen most of them.
It occured to me after watching the last episode where Elaine convinces her gay friend to "switch teams" only to have him switch back that Elaine has slept with about 6 different guys on the show. Do you think that she is being portrayed as too easy? I'm not trying to start a flame war here, just posing a question.
Well, Elaine is portayed as an intelligent character, so therefore we can probably assume that she is using condoms. (One hopes that her diaphragm is a back-up device against pregnancy and not her sole means) She also exhibits enough traits of confidence and independence that we could also assume that she is not sleeping with men to compensate for some sort of behaviour flaw. Therefore, she is probably sleeping with these men because she finds them sexually interesting and because at the time she feels sexual (i.e. horny). There has been nothing in her character to indicate that she would just use these men and rudely cast them aside, so on the whole the sexual aspects seem to be mature even when the relationships don't work out.
In summary? Nahh... She's just having a good time.
Excuuuuse me? How many women has our dearest Seinfeld slept with on the show? Hmmm? I'd say that if Elaine is being portrayed as being too easy, then it follows that Seinfeld is being portrayed as a genuine slut-puppy. Let's have a little equal opportunity bashing here, shall we?

maybe i missed it (god, i hope i missed it) but how come we're only examining Elaine's sex life? hmm? it's not because (gasp) she's a woman, is it?
what about Jerry, or George, or Kramer/Kosmo/Cosmo? how many people have _they_ slept with on the show (as individuals, i mean and hope)? why aren't we discussing them, too? except Newman -- i can understand why we're not talking about Newman.
and what *is* the magic, er, cut-off number of people to sleep with before you are labelled "easy"?
I don't think Elaine can be considered easy simply because she has had alot of dates. Remember the dentist who wanted to take her to the Super bowl and when Jerry told her the only reason he wants you to go is because he wants to sleep with you she backed out. She told him in the cab aren't we getting a room with two beds.
What, do you think that anybody didn't grasp this? If the people
on this newsgroup like talking about the characters as if they were
real people, then where do you get off berating them for it? Do you
interrupt games of charades and say "Hey, you're all stupid! You
could just TALK and be done in seconds!"
If you don't like talking about the characters, then don't read
the messages that do. But I think you'll find this an awful empty
(not to mention boring) newsgroup if you do.

Wow! Pretty intense Pam....I am the original poster of this thread and I'm sorry to hear that you are distressed that I will be joining you in the new millenium. After posting, I realized that I may have made a mistake with the choice of the word "easy" but I've honestly enjoyed the conversation that has occurred. I was surprised at the responses where people made the comparisons that Jerry, George and Kramer were easy but it seemed that they were being defensive. Their opinion. Their reaction to my post. So be it.
My original thoughts were this. The character Elaine is what, about 33? Give or take a couple of years. You say the show deals with "VERY real" issues. Well, it occurred to me that Elaine never (to my recollection) talks about marriage or children. BUT, she seems to "sleep" with most of the men she has dated (excluding the Super Bowl ticket guy). To her, it never seems to be a major step in these relationships to sleep with the guy thus making it a more serious relationship. Again, maybe I shouldn't have said, "easy". How about "sexually relaxed"? Yes, I realize the other show characters are also "sexually relaxed" but I'm just thinking about Elaine and the "image" she is portraying.
Maybe I wouldn't have thought this about Elaine if it seemed that she gave it more thought. Do you ever remember her discussing this subject with Jerry? I mean, they talk about everything else, don't they? Pam, you say that women are "independant people with hopes and aspirations". What are Elaine's hopes and aspirations?
Once again, I'm sorry that you don't look forward to sharing the future with someone like me. Honestly, I'm looking forward to the future and the basis of my original post was the thinking that maybe Elaine wasn't portraying a positive image for women (not that Jerry and the others are doing a great job for men either!). Hope you have a better understanding of where I am coming from.

I agree with Ron, I'm not quite sure what you're on about. It's funny for Kramer, Sienfeld and the short fat guy to date and have sex, but not for Elaine? Is this because she's a woman? If a woman likes sex does this make her easy?

Your treading on really thin ice if that is what you mean. I'm really sick and tired of idiotic men wanting sexually experienced virgins, just in case they don't measure up. I think Elaine is great role model for women. A woman who likes sex and is happy to go out and get what pleases her. Men can only benefit from more sexually assertive women and I so hate the stud/slut differentiations between the genders. I think this is what "Sienfeld" is cashing in on, showing up society's absurdities, the prime example is the masterbation episode, when the boys were so amazed that Elaine caved before them.
