Guys, Besides Jerry's dad Morty, can you name another character that has been played by two people?

     You won't ever see it in syndication  but another ac-
tor, whose name escapes me, actually played George's
father Frank Costanza for one episode only, when the
character was first introduced on the show. They de-
cided the casting wasn't working, so he was replaced
by Stiller, with highly successful (and funny) results.
However, it wasn't just a running change like the ear-
lier recasting of Jerry's father, Morty...several scenes
of that episode, introducing Frank Costanza as a char-
acter, were actually reshot months later using Jerry
Stiller in place of the performer originally cast in the part.
Some say that up to a third of that episode was redone,
with all original Frank Costanza footage discarded and
Stiller's footage spliced into the episode in its place.
     I've read that the scenes were reshot even before
NBC got around to re-running that episode the summer
after its original airing...and that the original actor playing
Frank was cut from all prints released for broadcast in
North America after having been seen only once, in the
first airing of that one episode on the NBC network. The
original edit has been withdrawn for good. So you won't
even be seeing him and getting a chance to compare him
with Jerry Stiller---although it's certainly hard to imag-
ine anyone BUT Stiller as Frank Costanza.

The original actor playing Jerry's father, Phil Bruns, CAN still be seen in his one appearance on the show, in the first season. The scenes were NOT reshot with Barney Martin, who has played the role ever since. Martin is also an improvement over Bruns as Jerry's dad, though Bruns was competent in the part, so I wonder why that footage wasn't reshot at some point as well, since it might improve the episode.

Did anyone see the original actor in the Frank Costanza role, and was he so miscast that a re-shoot was needed while the improvement from recasting Morty Seinfeld was more subtle? Or was this just one of those things that they were able to do because, by the time the Frank Costanza role was created, they had the success and the money to be able to reshoot to improve an episode for rerun and syndi- cation, while the recasting of Jerry's father happened early in the run (in about episode 7) before the show caught on?

Incidentally, a lot of people talk of Newman as a char- acter who was recast as well...and that's true in a way, but only in terms of the voice track. When the character was introduced (as a neighbor threatening suicide in an early episode) he's not seen, only heard with the voice of Larry David on the original network run. They decided to develop Newman the next season, and from the first episode in which he's actually seen, Wayne Knight plays the role. It was easy to go back and re-dub a few seconds of voice track when that episode went into the rotation for off-network syndication, and that's what was done.

Was Delores <Mulva> played by two different women? I remember seeing her again when Jerry was single after breaking off his engagement with Jeanie, but I couldn't if it was the same actress we had seen previously.

George's father was also played by two different people. He was originally played by John Randolph in the episode "The Handicap Spot". Then he was replaced by Jerry Stiller for all subsequent episodes. When Seinfeld went into syndication in 1995, the scenes with John Randolph in the "Handicap Spot" were re-filmed using Stiller.

the guy that played lloyd braun changed too - in the non fat yogurt he was played by one guy and then in the gum episode he's someone different after he gets out of the hospital after having had a nervous breakdown. i think he showed up again this season to compete with george working for mr. costanza selling computers.

Frank Costanza was played by a bold guy in the episode where George parks his car in the handicap parking and it gets destroyed. He was later replaced by the <real> Frank, who's probably George's real father.

Since I came to IBM I can't have a webpage that anyone outside of IBM can see, they are a little nervous about the netword here. Any and all trivia quizzes are enjoyed. I myself am in the process of making up a quiz that lists quotes and asks for the episode in which they were said, who said them, and some context since without context, many of the lines aren't as funny. It might be a little while before I have enough to call it a quiz - I have 4 or 5 now. At any rate, go for it! :-)
