Kramer got dumber, not smarter...

I remember seeing an interview with Michael Richards where he said that he developed the character of Kramer to get smarter as the series progressed. But I simply don't understand this. Any Seinfeld buff would clearly notice that Kramer got more weird and airheaded.

The interview was probably during an earlier season.

I've only seen up to series 6 so can't comment beyond that. But I heard an interview reported (maybe the same one) wherein Richards said for the first half dozen *episodes* or so he played him dumb and from then on he played him as if he was intelligent but just on a slightly different level. From what I've seen that corresponds fairly precisely with the reality.
