Laughing Jerry

Does anybdy want to comment on the fact that despite all the genius of the show and all... - Jerry is the worst actor on TV - he can't a joke without laughing - he always tries to cover his smile - like with the coffee mug in cafe etc. Also cameras are trying t focus on him at those moments. Still, Seinfeld is the best sow ever! Oleg

Ah, but for a stand up comedian Jerry is a very GOOD actor.

All the others smile through their lines. And Jerry's not cracking up all over the place on camera...give him a break. He was a little weak when the show started b/c he had no acting experience, but now he's starting to measure up alongside his comrades.

I would hardly call Jerry the worst actor on the show, maybe the one with the least talent is more PC. Fact is, he's a stand-up comic, and they're not known for stupendous acting ability. He laughs a lot through his lines, but I don't really think it takes away from them. At least he's better than Paul Reiser.

Although I can not agree that "Jerry(Seinfeld)is the worst actor on TV", I have noticed the smiles that you are referring to. I have always thought that the real genius of Seinfeld is that he portrays himself. By playing himself he is not really required to assume a new identity. Whenever I catch one of those "smiles" it always makes me chuckle. It reminds me of all the old sketches on "The Carol Burnett Show" where Harvey Corman and Tim Conway would be in the middle of a bit and Conway would do some outrageous thing and Corman would bust a gut trying to finish the scene. The beauty in this type of thing is the obvious ability of the other actors to keep a straight face. Let's face it Jason Alexander, Julia Louis Dreyfuss, and Michael Richards get to really ham it up most of the time while Jerry has to react to their antics in front of a live studio audience. I'm sure that is not an easy task. I like it when Jerry smiles, he's acknowledging humor in the scene that he can not cover up. After all, the guy IS a comedian, NOT a Shakespearean actor :)

Seeing Seinfeld laugh in his sitcoms always made me think he wasn't that good an actor until I saw the episode where he and Kramer switched personalities. Seinfeld did a really decent imitation. I was impressed.

To be a decent stand-up commedian you have to be able to act somewhat, Jerry is a bit wooden, that's all.

I think he laughts simply because he relishes how good the material plays in front of a live audience. It's not like he doesn't know the joke is coming, he simply enjoys it

Jerry cracking a smile has always reminded me of Harvey Korman laughing at Tim Conway. Very unprofessional but also very funny. It just reinforces that this is a sitcom about nothing and should not be taken that seriously. In the first season you can see Jason (George) being distracted by\ Jerry when he cracks that smile. I loved the imitation of Kramer, but even in that you can see Jerry crack a smile or two
