Susan's Dead? What's funny about that?

This is my first post, too. I agree that the ending was awful. But it showed just how casual and callous George and the rest of the gang are about love and marriage. I don't think any of them are capable of loving anyone other than themselves.

I particularly couldn't stand the ending because I recently got engaged. My fiance and I are not in our 30s, like everyone on Seinfield, but we're both 29 - close enough. I know that if anything happened to Ken, my fiance, I would break down and cry and wouldn't be able to stand it. I know Ken would do the same thing if anything happened to me. So we the only way we can explain George's reaction to Susan's death is that he never loved her at all and just asked her to marry him to hop on the marriage bandwagon. A very poor excuse for proposing to someone!

I've never posted to this group, but last night's show was too weird. After last night's episode, I had kind of an uneasy feeling about the whole thing. First of all, it wasn't funny. And the cavelier attitude they all displayed (particularly George) was unsettling. My first thought was that "even George isn't that shallow." They all cannot be that shallow!! Which leads me to think that there's something else going on here.....could it be some kind of dream of Jerry's or George's?

If the writers are writing Susan out of the script (for good) they surely showed incredibly bad taste. It was not a bit funn. If I'm not mistaken, writers, it was George who asked Susan to marry him! Does anyone agree or disagree that the ending showed incredibly bad taste?

Let's get this straight: Susan never meant anything to Jerry, Elaine or Kramer. Kramer didn't even know her name. A few episodes back Susan said she *didn't like* any of George's friends. She kicked Kramer off the wedding usher job. She belittled George all season, so tell me, why would he feel bad about her death??

If they wanted to kill her off, the character at least deserved a semi-realistic demise. The whole episode seemed off to me, like they were just trying to fit in a bunch of things, whether they made a coherent story or not.

I agree totally. It was in extremely bad taste. To kill a regular charactor and make a joke of it? Unbelievable! We have someone in our family who is terminally ill and this did not play very well in our house. I'm sure it didn't in other's, in the same situation.

Absolutely terrible episode. The characters are usually shallow, of course, but last night they were monsters. Besides, Susan was one of my favorite characters, much more interesting than Elaine.

I guess, in retrospect, I really don't think it matters too much how the season finale ended. Despite the fact that I thought it was tasteless and unfunny, I'll still tune in next year. Seinfeld storylines rarely carry over from season to the next in any substantial form. The opposite reactions by George died from one season to the next. The pilot died from one season to the next. Susan is dead and will remain dead and that alone should be grounds for any decent person to boycott the show. The poor writing and lack of humor prevalent in the episodes leading into this season and the shows this season not related to the engagement storyline also should contribute to any sane person ceasing to view it. They won't even mention the death next season in any meaningful way (except to crack jokes about how absolutely hilarious it is to have someone close to you die young) and I'm surprised they started the Jerry engagement storyline this late. Look for that to be dismissed as insignificant relatively quickly in the premiere. The show is doomed and the negative reaction to the finale is justified. The positive reaction is sickening.

Finally, this moron makes a mistake an comments on something substantive. George was not proposing to Susan to jump onto any marriage bandwagon, he genuinely liked her. He may have been pushed into proposing by the pact with Jerry but in at least two instances prior to his proposal he was considering getting back together with her (the Odor episode and the beginning of the Season Premiere). The people who think that George hated Susan obviously don't watch the show on anything resembling a regular basis.
