Couple Believes They've Found KFC Recipe Chicken Company Files Suit To Get Paper Back SHELBYVILLE, Ky., 3:23 p.m. EST January 28, 2001 -- It's one of the best-kept secrets in the culinary world -- the recipe for Kentucky Fried Chicken. Now a Kentucky couple thinks they found it -- and the company wants it back.

Tommy and Cherry Settle say that they found the handwritten note in a datebook in a box of books that used to belong to KFC founder Colonel Harlan Sanders. The Settles bought Sanders' home in the 1970s.

Cherry Settle told the Lexington Herald-Leader that the recipe calls for eleven herbs and spices -- which is the same number for KFC's "original recipe" chicken. The exact blend is a secret as well kept as the formula for Coca-Cola.

KFC says that only a handful of people know the recipe -- and they're sworn to secrecy.

The Settles contacted KFC because they were considering selling the datebook. KFC has filed suit to get the paper.

The paper is now locked in a courthouse safe.

SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A handwritten recipe found in the former home of Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Colonel Harland Sanders was returned Friday to the couple who found it after the company concluded it was not his secret recipe. The recipe was the subject of a short legal fight that ended this week when the company said the recipe wasn't even close to Sander's original recipe of 11 herbs and spices. The couple, restaurateurs Tommy and Cherry Settle, found it in a 1964 book in the basement of the home they bought from Sanders in the 1970s. Cherry Settle would not divulge any of the recipe's ingredients, except salt and pepper. She said the recipe, like the Colonel's secret, includes 11 herbs and spices. ``We're anxious to try it and see how it tastes,'' she said. A judge had kept the book while the fast-food giant determined whether it was the secret recipe. Tommy Settle said the couple may display the book at their restaurant but would not serve the recipe to customers. KFC spokesman Rick Weber said the company would like to display the book at its Louisville headquarters, but that the couple have no obligations to the company. ``They are free to do with the ingredients what they like, and we wish them well,'' he said.
