-i've never liked this line very much...i mean how deaf would a spanish person have to be to get the two words mixed up? there are two different sounds there; "er" and "ah." the line is totally contrived and unfunny, but is a good example of what george and jerrry's show might have sounded like in their universe.

Not contrived at all. In a typical New York accent, 'seltzer' IS pronounced 'seltzah', which is closer to 'salsa' than 'seltzer'.

The point was, with their Noo Yawk accents, the "er" sound at the end of a word sounds like "ah." Think of Mike Myers' Linda Richmond talking about Barbra's voice: "It's like buttah."

A nice contrast to the Brittish who tend to pronounce "a" as "er." That really drives me nuts.
