When Elaine refers to the woman at the party that "maybe the dingo ate your baby", was she referring to the woman who was charged with the murder of her baby when she in fact said that dingos had taken the baby??

It wasn't holding my interest and so I continued flipping. Eventually I came back around to it, only to see it had been based on a true story. I think a couple really did lose their baby to one of those wild dogs, and knowing that, it's hard for me to think they used it for a joke. I know I sound sensitive here and certainly Seinfeld does poke humor at real life incidents: Kennedy assasination, O.J. Simpson's trial, etc.. Maybe if I'd known the story beforehand it would be different. But finding out something you say in jest is actually someone else's tragedy kinda makes it not so funny. Just an opinion. Jeremy

The quote probably came from 'Evil Angels'. The movie was based on a true story. A baby disappeared near Ayers Rock from a camping ground in the early 80s, and the mother (Lindy Chamberlin) was convicted of the baby's murder, even though there wasn't really much evidence. The baby's brother was in the tent at the time and allegedly saw a dingo come and take the baby - but the kid was only 6 or something so this didn't hold up in court. Ironically, the baby's name was Azaria which means 'sacrifice'!!

Lindy Chamberlin was in jail for years before being released. A very sad story

Apparently from the above thread, the woman was finally released from prison. So I guess we'll never know if the Dingo did eat her baby (yuck!), or if the woman was responsible for the slaying of her child.

After all the hubbub about The Dingo, I found it rather funny that some guy in Indiana (I think it was Indiana) is looking for a Dingo as a pet in the NG rec.pets.dogs.breeds! From the thread, it sounds like they're illegal to own in the USA, not to mention sort of unpopular in Australia.

`Guess he doesn't watch Seinfeld, or isn't a fan of Meryl Streeps!:)
