There's a scene in the above show when Elaine is on a sofa and starts saying "Did the dingo eat your babies" (or something like that) - it really made me laugh, but can anyone shed any light on WHY she said this?

If you remember the episode, she said it because the other woman next to her said that her husband (baby) was missing. Elain says, "Maybe the dingo ate your baby." in an Australian accent. As for the saying, it is just a saying from Australia. Just like "G'day Mate" or "Put a shrimp on the barbi." I think it was during the 80's, when there was that infamous case where the mother was accused of killing her baby in Australia, but the mother said a dingo took the baby. Maybe that is where the saying came from.
Uh.....everyone knows what a dingo is, right? Or am I giving everyone too much credit, just like the time we all assumed everyone knew what B.O. stood for?
Right! I'd forgotten what preceded it. I knew she was referring to the Lindy Chamberlain case, but couldn't see how!

The woman Elaine was talking to...I don't think she was Australian. If I remmeber correctly, she did not have an accent.
That case was interesting. Did you see the movie, with Meryl Streep (sp?)? I guess it is possible. I never met a dingo in person, so I would not know how they behave.
Yep, I did see the film. The woman was accused of killing the baby herself, and then some six years later the baby's clothing was found on Ayers Rock and it was proved a dingo did do it. There have also been recent attacks on Fraser Island, which is I think off the Australian east coast.

"Maybe the dingo ate your baby" is not an Australian saying. "Put a shrimp on the barbi" is not an Australian saying. "G'day Mate" is certainly an Australian saying. (Just thought I'd clear that up)
The movie is "Evil Angels" where Meryl Streep plays Lindy Chamberlain, whose daughter, Azaria went missing at Ayers Rock in the centre of Australia. She said a dingo took her baby.
Recently, on Fraser Island (off the East coast of Aus.) dingoes attacked two boys and one of the boys died so a cull was executed on the wild dogs.
