The end of history

   Remember when the Berlin Wall came down,  and that psuedo-intellectual wrote
 that this event signalled the end of history?  Well of course we saw right
 through his faulty reasoning.  Then somebody pointed out that the fact that
 everything is in- that you can be hip in everything from a buzz cut to dread
 locks, from bell bottoms to tapered legs- was proof that we were at the end of
 time.  This argument made more sense than the first, but still seemed to fall
 short.  But it just occured to me that there now exists incontrovertible proof
 that we are at the end- Seinfeld.  Never again can there be another sit com as
 funny.  It is impossible.  They could put re-runs on during prime time every
 night of the week and make the top ten- blowing away everyone else except for
 maybe one or two (if they had new episodes airing).  Its quite unsettling.
 Anything anyone tries to put on the air now will either look like the same
 lame, flat, markedly unfunny stuff they've been putting on since the end of
 World War II  or it will look like a cheap and blatant Seinfeld rip off (just
 wait till the next wave lands in Hollywood from school here in the immediate
 future).   Of course there is the possibility that Seinfeld is the first sign
 of the arrival of maturity for television (it could be argued NYPD Blue is arm
 in arm in this respect with Seinfeld -covering the action genre)  and that we
 are in for a TRUE Golden Age- that Seinfeld is just the first show on
 television that is actually funny on a consistent basis.   But I'm not holding
 my breath.
  (P.S.  -The first blatant Kramer rip off has already appeared now that I
 think about it- the lame ass who takes care of Paul and Jamie's dog on Mad About You.  Weak.  )
