As a sociologist, I feel compelled to comment here.

A stereotype is usually an exaggeration of some culturally or structurally relevant characteristic of a specific population of people. For instance, how about the stereotype that graduate students and their professors sleep together? This is an exaggeration of the fact that graduate students and professors often spend many hours together, sometimes late at night, work under close conditions and generally have an intimate working relationship with each other. Some sleep together, many do not.

We need to remember the difference between generalizations that can be made on scientific grounds about _groups_ of people and assuming that these things are true about any one person in particular.
