Hi All! Can anyone tell me what a chocolate babka is and how it's spelled? TIA Linda
You have the spelling correct. Babka is a type of coffee cake, of Polish origin. Here in New York, it's commonly found at Jewish bakeries, because many Jews in New York are from, or have parents/grandparents who are from, all over Eastern Europe. It's probably available in Polish bakeries as well, although I've never checked.
Babka is available with various flavorings, such as fruit (apricot, etc.) or chocolate. In my experience, many older people have strongly-held opinions about the merits, or lack thereof, of chocolate babka; they either like it or hate it. It seems that most younger people like it.
