Getting a little tired of the "this season is so terrible" thread running through this newsgroup as well as from several critics (I truly believe that the response of people of this season has influenced Jerry the most about returning). I am one of the first to admit that many episodes this season have missed a step. I'm still reserving my final opinion until these are seen again. I remember three seasons ago, I almost stopped watching the show yet now I enjoy these episodes in syndication all the more.
I think despite this season's faults, it has brought us some great moments and still remains original television if not always funny. One needs to look no further than the many recent shows that NBC has tried to cultivate to see this. Shows like Union Square, The Single Guy, Suddenly Susan, Caroline and the City, Veronica's Closet, Just Shoot Me, Working highlight the fact that just calling a show "the surprise hit of the season" does not an eventual comedy classic make. Although some of these shows have their moments, they are quite formulaic; Seinfeld- old and new - has tried to be original and fresh and sometimes reaches too high perhaps in it's attempts. Even successful shows like Mad About You, Home Improvement, Friends and yes even Frasier (which I think is one o the funniest shows on TV) fall into certain patterns, recycling old jokes or tride-and-true plotlines. Despite its shortcomings, I think Seinfeld had tried to stay one of a kind.
I hope most agree. And I'd like to think that people could reserve judgement until some shows have time to grow on you, and enjoy these last few episodes. After ten more, Seinfeld's over.....perhaps then there will be less insults about people's opinions on this newsgroup. Then we'll be spending ur time asking trivia like "What softball team was Jerry playing for?" in "The Pony Remark" episode.
