Isn't the "laugh track" you refer to actually an audience watching the camera roll? You assume it's some poor schmo dubbing appropriate laughter from a canned track. I do agree, however, that the "audience" track is usually too loud, so much so, to bury some dialog. How loud does it have to be?

It's one reason why some people think that Simpsons is better than Seinfeld. In Simpsons, they don't think of you as a dumbass and provide a laughtrack to tell you where all the jokes are.
