what the hell is this dumb-ass name? Who the hell thought of it? I think just leaving the whole thing a mystery would have been the best idea. But then again, their shows have been puuuurty shitty lately.
By the way, Cosimo ( not Cosmo) is an italian name. Does Kramer look italian to you? He does to me!
I'd have to agree with you. Seems like they want to put so much stuff into one episode, they lose sight of making it funny. There are a few gags here and there, but the stories are really lame and so contrived. The only reference I remember regarding the name "Cosmo" is a cinematic one. Gene Kelly's musical partner in "Singing in The Rain" was named Cosmo. One wacky thing about Kramer's name would have been enough. Either we should have known Kramer's first name was Cosmo from the start or if we had to know Kramer's first name it should have been something less unusual, like Bob, so not to take away from his Kramerness. But I doubt the cast will be calling him Cosmo now as a rule. It was probably a one episode deal.
Also note that one of the uncles on Moonstruck was named Cosmo.

The Topper of the three films in the series was Roland Young. However, a more accessible Cosmo can be found in the Jetsons -- Cosmo Cogswell. And isn't Kramer a sort of cosmic cog?
And how about Cosmo (Ben Kingsley) from the movie "Sneakers"... Robert Redford, River Pheonix, and a few other notables starred in it too...
