Who cares!

What is with all these people wondering who is Jewish and who isn't? Who cares, and what does it matter anyway? You know Jerry is, Elaine isn't, George isn't, and Kramer, who knows? In real life, Jerry is, Elaine is half Jewish, George is, and again, who knows about Kramer. So, it's cleared up. Now let's all talk about the show, not the peoples' religion!!

I agree that to some extent the question of the characters' religions has been WAY too discussed. However, the Jewishness of the characters and, indeed, the whole ambience of the show, is part of its unique appeal. Especially in episodes like "The Pen" which is a letter-perfect satire of how hung-up on minutiae senior Jews can get. I have older relatives who act like that ALL the time, arguing about NOTHING!

Also, I think that the characters' Jewishness is much more an ATTITUDE than religious. Being a Jew and originally from New York, I can testify that there is a cultural thing about New York Jewishness that one cannot find even among Jews in other parts of the country (with the exception of South Florida, which is partially populated by a community of elderly retired Jews from New York). It's the same attitude that is prevalent in early Woody Allen comedies.

I think too many people west of the Delaware River think everybody in the NYC-NJ area is Jewish. We all look alike to them unless we are black or hispanic. Only us natives can tell the difference. The Black Hat from NJ, who is of Irish-German extraction

I agree totally. I finally had to stick the word "jew" and "catholic" in my kill file for this group. It cuts out about almost half of the messages.
