Fuzzy talk

I too noticed the garbled speech in the 10/28 episode. I think we missed some of the funniest lines because they were uninteligible. I wonder what happened. Is there some higher power that intervened? Too many dirty words in one episode?

Also, the picture skipped a frame or two every once in a while? Peculiar for a prerecorded (i.e. not live) show. Why all the glitches?

I am glad to hear others had this problem. I thought my vcr was finally starting to bad or that I had discovered new types of video dropouts.

It seems to me that there were about three instances of the picture or sound being distorted. Maybe the Cubans were jamming the signal. d8^)

   In Philadelphia, the beginning of the show was delayed, so
we started part of the way into the monologue(opening credits).
There were also some other scenes which were garbled for a couple
of seconds.  Did anyone else have problems at the opening.  if
so the problem was nationwide, not just a local phenomenon.

Wait a minute... I think I have life all wrong. I always thought reality was more or less smooth, but every now and then watching something from tape I'd see it start jumping around and getting choppy. Maybe I've got it backwards. This could change everything!

My own theory is that it was intentional. They didn't want us to hear whatever it was George had to say about Johnny Carson. Maybe they couldn't even think of anything as funny as just the idea that George would say something about Johnny Carson and Susan's father would sputter about how he never liked the guy. So they chopped it up, and everybody thought it was a local cable foul-up (that's hard to believe .. NOT!). Until we, *the brave Usenetters* uncovered the plot. It wasn't local, it was nationwide! And they're so sophisticated that they even added a few very minor glitches elsewhere in the broadcast to enhance the deception. Brilliant!

Naw. Look at the conflicting evidence here. Sounds like the Warren Report. The screen goes "a little fuzzy" all over the country, right when Cuban cigars and Johnny are mentioned, and you say there are only two spitters? It had to take at least three...

What about Kissinger's involvement with Queen Elizabeth, and the Tri-Lateral Commission? (Ooops, sorry, wrong conspiracy theory ...)

Yes! I think you're onto something here. I also saw the glitches and briefly thought it might be some censoring. Then it happened again, kinda like local cable trouble (although that usually doesn't happen here in Palo Alto ... NOT!). So now we know, it was intentional. They thought they could fool us. I think it was an inside job - a hoax! See, Johnny Carson is the Godfather of NBC, and he don't like nobody bad mouthing him, see. He's got ways of making you pay, see. Like messing up your broadcast, see. Yes it was a higher power that intervened ... heeeeerre's Johnny!

... (or so goes the inside joke in the Seinfeld staff).

Or the show producing is showing the side effects of exposure to that Dewey Decimal System. ("What a sham that was!")

as far as i remember, there were no garbled lines or glitches here. the only lines you couldn't catch were the ones that jerry said to george when he was telling him what the woman said to him when she was talking dirty. and i'm sure we weren't supposed to hear those. our imaginations could do a much better job than anything they could do on network TV.

didn't notice this either.

susan's father said something (which i can't remember) and george answered:

"i did not know that"

just like dana carvey on SNL.

well, i rewatched my tape this weekend and i was wrong about the garbled speech during george's line about carson. but he definitely said "i did not know that" then wah wah wah (read like as if it were an adult character on peanuts).

I didn't notice any "glitches" either.....Wasn't it funny when Kramer was in the Cuban embacy....nobody mentioned the Cubans.....maybe everyone is afraid of Castro????

I tried posting a reply earlier this week, but I think the connection was down, and we're two days behind on everything now. So here goes again.

It seems all the people who had glitches were in the northeast part of the country. Here on the west coast, we had no such glitches (though I have noticed video glitches during Leno's monologues). The dirty talk in the cafe was definitely unintelligible. The conversation about Carson went something like this (note that I'm paraphrasing, not trying to repeat verbatim):

father - You know those cigars were made especially for Castro? George - I did not know that. Wild. Crazy. pause. daughter - He's doing Carson, Daddy. father - I never did like his humor. George - monologue about laughing.

Maybe you didn't read all the articles (including mine). I saw the glitches. Stanford is in California. California is generally considered to be on the west coast, unless you're from Hawaii!

I saw it via cable (Cable Co-op in Palo Alto, to be exact.) Maybe only cable feeds got interfered with.

Well, I just moved to California, and I didn't go to Stanford, so maybe my geography has suffered. Thank you for pointing out exactly where California is located. Gosh, I guess I'm lucky to have made it, considering I drove here.

Maybe you didn't read my article, where it says that our connection was down, and that we were days behind on everything.

Our cable was okay. However, I did see a lot of glitches over the weekend. Perhaps it's a result of the current geomagnetic storms. (I'm sure there are some EE's here that know more about such things.)

Well, I'm no EE but the Sun has been active lately (a major storm effected many satellites over the first weekend in November), so it's possible to attribute it to the problem.

Just as long as it doesn't effect this week's episode of Seinfeld! :)
