Some people got offended that the Puerto Rican flag was accidentally set on fire by Kramer. So NBC decided to buckle under and become very politically correct and never show the episode again.

See I don't get it. The flag burning scene went on for about 30 seconds. They cut that much out in syndication anyway don't they? Why ban an entire episode for 30 seconds of fire?

there is more to it than the flag burning. i've read that an episode of "Law & Order" with some "douse and grab" action in the park on Puerto Rican Day will also never be re-aired (at least not by NBC).

what kills me is I happene to be out the day they aired it and I taped it. The day after i taped over it, they announced it would never air again :-(. It wasn't that great an episode but it would ahve been noce to be able to see it once in a while.

I'm just glad they didn't retire or edit The Contest after JFK Jr. died.

Yeah, I taped over it because some weather warning banners scrolled across the bottom of the screen, ruining the picture. As soon as I taped over it, they announce that it will never be shown again. I disagree with you on the episode, though - I thought it was a good episode, one of the better eps from the final season. And, since it was the last regular episode before the finale, it was also the last "good" episode of the show (given how awful the finale was).

That's dumb that they banned it though, especially if a FICTICIOUS character FICTICIOUSLY sets it on fire... that shouldn't offend people. If Kramer yelled "DAMN SPIKS" and lit it a'blaze, then you have something.

No I'm not racist or insensitive, it's just that everything is too damned politically correct these days.

(by the way, I haven't posted here in awhile, and when I did, it wasn't that much, so basically to this newsgroup, I'm a nobody... But I'm no troll!)

What's absurd about it is that some Puerto Ricans react badly in the episode for comic effect, because to get that outraged over a burning flag is ridiculous... than, in the real world, Puerto Ricans react badly and make themselves look as completely ridiculous as the Puerto Rican characters in the show.

That certainly would be the "pc" way to go, but I would still say that there is something wrong when folks can't grasp that the joke was NOT on Puerto Ricans at all, but rather on Kramer, who was being a complete doofus in the episode with the flag. Also, he was trying to put the fire OUT !! This was comedy, pure and simple, and certainly NOT an affront to the U.S. protectorate. I think this episode should be seen again. Of all the nationalities that make up the great U.S.A, why are Puerto Ricans such sacred cows ? Is it purely a case of political clout? Just wondering..... Since the show is no longer on NBC, why can't the show be shown in re-runs? Doesn't Castle Rock Entertainment own the rights? Or did they agree to not show it also?
