I'm on a date with my girlfriend and we started talking about the dating scene which we're all so "fond" of. She mentioned that she used to go to singles events just to be social with her single girlfriends, not really to be "picked up" by guys. However, that wouldn't preclude her from talking to someone who seemed relatively nice. So, she'd talk with a guy for a while, having a nice chat. Then the awkward moment would come, where he'd ask her for her number. Well, rather than give it out and not return his calls, she'd simply say something like "I'm actually dating someone right now. Sorry." Often, she'd get a very nasty response to this, the guy fuming at her for "leading him on."

I felt like this was a PERFECT Seinfeld issue. Just how does a woman deal with this kind of situation, tactfully? Being a guy, my usual take would be to ask for a number if I was SURE she liked me, alleviating this kind of embarrassment. I never considered how a woman would handle this if she didn't want to give out her number.

So, what would be the appropriate response? I thought an acceptable reply might be "I'm just here being social, and not interested in dating anyone in particular. Thanks for asking, anyway." or maybe short and simple like "Maybe some other time. Sorry." and walk away? Hmmm... what would Elaine do? ;^)

In the ep where she has to buy a pencil, she gives the clerk at the stationary store Jerry's number. If I were a woman in the situation you describe, I'd be honest the first time, but I'd keep several phone numbers handy in case the guy was insistant. Then I'd give him the number to a massage parlor/cathouse or the police station or a convent or something embarrassing.

Once in college three friends shared a dorm room. Two slept in bunk beds with the third across the room in a single bed. The guy in the single bed was dreaming he was being chased, and the guy in the top bunk was dreaming he was falling -- and he actually fell, on top of the guy in the single bed. They both screamed blood-curdling screams that woke up the entire dorm at 3 a.m. It sounded like someone was being murdered. Everyone laughs about it now except the guy in the bottom bunk, who awoke to think both of his roommates were being murdered -- all he could hear was screaming and all he could see was two figures struggling two feet away.

If they could get Jerry, Kramer and George into this type of sleeping arrangement, this could be a hilarious scene.

My two roommates and I have constant seinfeld-esque situations. One of them involved me driving out to a suburb of Boston to see a friend from high school and getting lost. I went up to the house that I thought was hers and read the name on the door "The Conners" that's not the name of my friend. So I knocked, hoping to get some directions. A girl answered the door, she was about my age, and she let me use the phone. Then she gave me a town map and circled her house and the easiest way to get to my friends house. I found my way to my friends house. When I told this to my roommate he said i should call her. So I looked up Conners in the phone book for the town and I called. She was surprised that I called and said she was interested in going out sometime. A week later I drove out to pick her up and we went and saw a movie and had a coffee. It was so coincidentally seinfeld-esque. [email] wrote:
