Why wasn't the camera man who videotaped them cracking jokes while they watched put on trial also? To quote bobcat goldwaidth, "put the camera down and help me"

Which didn't make any sense, since videtaping the crime was the best help he could have given.
Although video taping would help it's not the best thing to do. Since the law's purpose was to stop criminals from hurting or killing. The police officer says he herd about it after Pirices Diana died. Video taping it would help catch the criminal, but not stop the crime. But the fact that there were other people around who could help, at that time, should allow him to get off the hook.

It's the best thing to do when confronted with an armed criminal. One of the things police stress is that citizens shouldn't endanger themselves. The law they were charged under even says they didn't.
